MFA collection notes  
Man's embroidered night cap (43.250 polychrome):
-polychrome silk night cap with metal embroidery and spangles
-same pattern on all four lobes with slightly different motifs alternating on the tops
-unlined brim with metal bobbin lace applied to the edge
-while most of embroidery is in great shape, the black thread on bees and elsewhere has almost completely rotted away
-colors on cornflowers are not standard, colors are switched up randomly on the panels
-single patterns on the brim
-cap is lined in four panels of cream silk, small stitches attach it delicately to brim- could be original

Man's embroidered night cap (43.251 black and gilt):
-all black silk and metal thread embroidery
-speckled black shading used instead of a colored fill in the design
-some gold work is used as the fill on the flowers petals
-brim is lined in gray silk
-cap is lined in striped silk with teal ribbon edge- not likely original
-no lace on the edge

Embroidered coif (43.248):
-faded and stained
-drawstring still in casing
-the top seam is not completely sewn together
-top edges are hemmed prior to being closed
-front edges are ragged and not finished, as if an edge or lining had been roughly removed
-no current lining
-metal thread chain stitch outline around the edge of the design, from casing, to front edges and the top edge
-purple flowers
-striped leaves of silk and metal thread

Embroidered coif (43.249):
-no drawstring in the casing
-red and blue blanket stitched edge around the front edges and top edge prior to seaming shut
-outline in pale green silk stem stitch around the edge of the design
-no lining in place, but not trimmed to the edge either
-front edges are folded in and stitched in place carefully, white thread for tacking in extra fabric can barely be seen through to the front of the coif
-coiled metallic spider-web stitch for the center of the flowers and a metal thread top knot design to conceal the pleating at the crown
-gold vine stops and starts at the joins in the design
-spangles attached with four stitches

An un-numbered embroidered coif:
-small metal lace edges coif
-pink and red strawberries
-green stem stitch on the edge of the design
-yellow silk blanket stitched hemmed edge
-coif has conservation lining, so unable to see inside
-simple gather of small pleats at the crown of the coif
-lots of striped leaves with metal and silk alternating stripes
-metal speckling on strawberries and roses

A doll coat made of two coifs (38.1386):
-technically classified as a small robe of two coifs
-one unfinished coif used for the body of the robe, with two small squares for the shoulders
-pieces of another unfinished coif used for the sleeves
-drawing of initial design still on fabric and seen at the front of the robe
-multiple (at least 3) types of lace pieced around the edge; neckline, front, hem, and cuffs
-spangles held on with bullion spring through the center hole
-robe lined from waist area to hem with a striped silk, not in the body and sleeves

Bodice back (60.560):
-drawing in black ink still visible in places
-while some familiar motifs in detached buttonhole, some are in a tight satin stitch giving a reversible effect to the back
-spangles held on with dark glass seed beads, with a single continuous dark blue thread, broken in the middle of the back

A pair of leather gloves with embroidered cuffs (43.411a-b):
-metal lace on edges, metal and silk embroidery in satin stitch, detached buttonhole, and chain stitch
-spangles on the cuffs
-pink ruffle at the join of the hands of the leather gloves to the silk embroidered cuffs
-squirrels, dogs, hart (hunting scene) on cuffs

Knit and embroidered pair of gloves with colored lace (38.1354a):
-Fine silk cream colored knit gloves, ~elbow length
-colored gimp lace edge on the cuffs of the knit gloves
-embroidered band sampler floral style design on cuffs and back of hand
-embroidery almost looks like stranded knitting initially

Knit gloves with embroidered woven fabric cuffs (said to have belonged to Cardinal Richelieu) (38.1357a):
- striped knit hands of gloves
-stripes are white/cream and coral in color
-white stripes are stockinette stitch, and coral stripes are purl stitches to give a nice texture
-hands of gloves are not lined, save conservation patches
-silk embroidered cuffs have conservation mesh in place over inside and out
-cuffs embroidered in satin stitch, stumpwork and goldwork

An embroidered Italian apron (43.1034):
-late 16th early 17th century
-linen ground with blue silk satin stitches and gold work
-simple drawn work on the edge
-white wide ribbon with brocade detailing for waist band
-blue and gold lace on edge of apron, and small gold eyelet lace on ends of ribbon
-loops separate from the lace applied at regular intervals along the lace edge
-buttons attached to loops on the side of the apron that are blue and gold woven/embroidered buttons in a chevron pattern

I love the knit and embroidered gloves. Do you know what embroidery stitches were used? If it almost looks liked stranded knitting, duplicate stitch may be the most likely.

If you go to the MFA site, you can zoom in on the picture they have up there. Those gloves were Branwen's favorites, so no doubt she took more detailed notes on them, if you really want to know more. I also have some hig res pictures I can send you if you want.

Will you guys be at Yule? I can make a CD and bring the laptop for the early afternoon to show off pictures.
