MTA 2008
Apparently this weekend was the 25th MTA held at Jamestown. I guess after making a big fuss for the 400th Anniversary, celebrating a 25th seemed kinda eh. But it was cool to see the variety of camps and troops. I hadn't seen the grand parade before, so I played paparazzi a bit on Sunday towards the end of the day.

After all the stress of ramping up and surviving the 400th, it was nice to be a bit more laid back. Lara, the new fort manager, asked us what we wanted to do and let us have our ease. Since Sandy's mom was in the Barracks, it seemed a bit crowded on Saturday, so I spent time knitting on my Tudor stocking outside the Buttery to draw folks in, checked on Dexter doing medical demos in the Gov's house to spell him a bit, and pretty much bounced around. I did have a small triumph in that the apricot almond custard needed to be removed from the Dutch Oven while Sandy and Carla were out looking at the sutlers and it was just Diane and myself. So, I managed to lift the pie plate out without cracking and dropping anything, and also without burning myself. Hooray! The food that was made on Saturday was extremely yummy and even sustained us some into Sunday.

Sunday was a smaller staff, so I worked with Jennie and Lara in the Barracks cooking simple pottages. I was able to take a few breaks and visit with others, drool over Eadric's pottery, chat with the nice folks of Grey's Company, buy the last of the amazing Canadian's knives (although I still need to arrange payment), and at Alan's direction, bought a nice chafing dish and pitcher so Alan can start doing period coffee preparation at events instead of using the camp stove and metal coffeepot. Yes ladies, I was asked to buy more pottery. Force my hand...

Alan and I exited the fort around 4:30pm, changed and got on the road home. We didn't encounter much traffic since we took 301 home to avoid the stretch of hell between Fredericksburg and Springfield, but we were dogged tired when we did get home. I've got an aching neck and sore feets, and Alan has an aching shoulder from a pinched nerve in his neck that he's visiting the chiropractor for. We've survived James Fort yet again, to play another weekend.

Ok, now I feel really silly. There was a guy from the fort who came into our camp, and I talked with him a little, but mostly I looked at him thinking I should have known him. I was also chasing the boys. That must have been Alan! If it was, please ask him to forgive me for being rude, I’m at my worst when I can’t figure out if I know somebody or not. :-)

Oh, and we live a little bit off of 301. If you need a break on your way home sometime, you’re welcome to stop.

Well, this: http://flickr.com/photos/jenthies/2339628530/in/set-72157604133504212/ is my Alan, so he may or may not have. I wouldn't feel bad since he said "Geoffrey and Mathilde who?" as I was chatting about the things seen in Grey's camp. He gets a little focused on fighting, and misses A&S aspects often, except the concept of making period coffee.

I thought about you guys as we drove through La Plata, but we just wanted to get home, y'know? Hope you and the boys managed to have a fun time.

Was he over practicing some WMA moves with our guys for a bit? It’s hard to tell with different clothes. I remember thinking that it was Fin, but then thinking maybe not. :-)

You can have coffee at Jamestown? I’m sold! ;-)

I'll ask Alan tonight if he went to play WMA with the guys from Grey's. Who knows?

Well, there is coffee available in the office for those who need it, but one of a few anachronistic parts of the fort. :) Fort staff without coffee are terrifying to behold.

Belatedly, I confirmed with Alan that he didn't make it into Grey's Company, and he agreed that it was likely Craig/Edwin.
He can be seen sort of in the back, hatless, in a black doublet in this picture: http://flickr.com/photos/jenthies/2215011521/sizes/l/in/set-72157594544679364/

If he was in green, it might have been Master Findleach

I did drop in and chat with Geoffrey for a bit on Saturday. If that was me, there was no rudeness involved, except on my own part for not introducing myself.

Nope, you weren’t rude at all!
Once I saw you, I recognized you. When I saw the other guy that looked a little familiar, I was kind of wondering if it was you, but then when I saw you, I knew you.
That has to make some sort of sense...

Hmm, I wonder if it might have been our Edwin? Alas, I didn't get any pictures of him, but he's got sandy-ish hair, glasses, fairly tan, and I can't remember what color he was wearing on Sat... But there is no reason he would know you, he's just a friendly guy, but likely to be very interested in WMA.

Then you do better than I. When it comes to putting faces with names, I have a mind like a steel sieve. I'm sure sometimes I come across as terribly aloof, but really I'm just clueless.

If he was playing at swords, it was probably Craig aka Edwin. He has a particular love for period fencing and historic martial arts.

Man, I didn't see either one of you! I chatted with Dexter, but that was it for finding anyone I knew.

Yup, I heard you were there in civies when I ran into Wulfric, Ceri, Orianna and the gang. I was out for a short bit with Kitty passing off our broken dining room lamp for her to fix. I had even stopped by the Viking camp earlier to ask about you, but they said you bailed when your cooking partner bailed. I did look for you, sorry to have missed you.

I had a blast looking through the photos, Gen--thanks!

I did MTA *ages* ago (as part of a 1st c. Celtic camp) and have always wanted to go back as a civilian and wander around. One of these years...

I'm still frustrated that I couldn't go. It was definitely better for me to stay home though. Glad you had good weather and a lot of fun.
