KWCS
I had a great time at KWCS in Philly this weekend, due entirely to wonderful friends and interesting classes.

Friday night was a fun dinner and hanging out with Drea and Calli, and the food was delicious. The applewood smoked ham calzone was super yummy.

Saturday I skipped the first class I had on my schedule, but I was moving slow and taking my time. oh well. It allowed me time to chat and visit with folks before settling in for a day of learning.

I really enjoyed the Pleated and Embroidered 16th cent Shirts class. I can see why others might have complaints, but considering the information covered, I thought it was an excellent intro class to the evolution of some shirt construction and basic into to pleatwork embroidery without going into too much mind-boggling technical detail.

I also loved the unintentional companion classes of the Ins and Outs of Extant Garments by Drea Leed, and Working with a Mundane Textile Collection. They showed great examples of extant pieces, some of the problems of recreating exactly from those pieces due to different postures now vs. then, some of the cool details found when taking a close look, what materials to prepare when you have the option to look at extant pieces from a museum collection (pencil, paper, gloves, calipers, markers, scale, etc.) There was also a bit of the lifting of the veil on the state of museum collections, problems with cataloging, the reasons to be as specific as possible in your questions, etc. Both had different foci, but were wonderful classes.

Alas I skipped the V-neck gown class, which I heard was insanely crowded, to sprang geek with Kyle from the East and look at his various attempts to recreate the pink and green argyle garters from the MFA, both playing with scale and patterning. He's on a good path and has an appointment to view them, which I know he'll adore. So cool!

Then I went shopping and got so distracted that I was a tad late to teaching my own class. Oops! Luckily I wasn't too late and since it was the last hour of the day I could go over the hour allottment. I hated that I felt like a monkey on crack when teaching and bouncing all over the place on the details, but did try to cover as much as possible. I wish I had more focus, but there were wonderful folks who asked great questions that let me fill in the blanks that I had skipped over. I was also grateful for the interest in butterfly token sales and that most of my handouts when away. I now only have 4 more butterfly tokens, and another decent donation I need to send up to Plimoth. Whoo!

Saturday night was enjoyable hanging out with the Spanish Peacocks with James and Calli fetching dinner back to the hotel, fun partying with amazing ladies who I rarely get quality time with, not enough sangria, various states of undress, and good times. We stayed up far too late, but had such fun that it was completely worth it. Alas I didn't join in on some of the puppy-piling as I had a slight tickle in my throat I didn't want to share. This turned out to be a very good idea as I've now been home sick and slow for the past 3 days. Bleargh.

Sunday I took the Frauenrock class, which had a lot of great information in it, and loved the aha moments of the hat portion of the hours. Whooo! I then spent the rest of the time hanging out and chatting with folks, and got so distracted chatting and comparing notes with Drea L. that I ended up skipping the Wappenrock class. Rats! Ah well, I hope for the notes to help me out when I get to that stage.

Kit and I took off around 5pm as things wound down, and I blathered to her the whole way home about the different classes I took, what value I got out of them, etc. She had the bright idea of calling Jim and Sandy as we were within 20 minutes of their place when we started thinking food. Though they had eaten, there were leftovers for us and we had a wonderful few hours stopping and visiting with them and chatting. Dinner and fun companionship is far better than the travel plaza we hit on the way up. We even got some beagle love. Made it home around 9pm to crash all too soon.

I realized that some of this pedagogy and putting together of classes for a coherent teachable moment from work has rubbed off on me. I did some mental comparing of classes and where things could be improved, what went right, what gave a good feel and what was a tad off-putting. I need to analyze any future classes I do from this point of view as it seemed some were more enjoyable and exciting than others and most of that has to do with delivery rather than interest in the subject.

Must think further on this, but for now another nap on the comfy couch of doom.

I'd like to remind myself that taking the hemming of the navy petticoat to the last Tuesday night practice outdoors will limit my productivity as the sun sets earlier than 9pm, especially when overcast. Perhaps the yellow knitting would have been a better project idea. You'd think I would have learned this from the hemming of Roland's daggy hood, yellow by daylight, purple by candlelight was brutal. Eh, at least I got it started.

My black cotton/linen petticoat that was my first bit of cartridge pleating ever has now been successfully converted from a back closing petticoat to a front closing petticoat. Note, back closing petticoats are a pain. Apparently I sewed on those hooks and eyes for life as I was only able to remove the hooks and those eyes are stuck on. It is nice to have a garment that I made back in 1997 still be functional and made well enough for me not to be ashamed of it 11 years later.

Despite inspiration from Pennsic and conversations, etc., I am committed to slowly working through my little unfinished projects before starting on something new. I should gather a mend pile as well. I know there are a few items in need of buttons, and mendy bits that I noticed before war and in the great laundry task after-war.
So I need to:
  • finish re-hemming the navy petticoat
  • finish tacking in the lining on a blue square-necked doublet
  • make a few more cloth buttons for the brown wool doublet
  • sew button holes and buttons on brown wool doublet
  • do the hand sewing on a couple of plain coifs and forehead clothes
  • finish hemp boned pair of bodies, lacing holes on second side and edges
that looks like an ambitious enough list so far...
I should take pictures of my finally finished shift and the converted petticoat closure for posterity.

An obvious sign of being in need of a massage is missing your massage appointment because you are too busy at work to spit.
Yep.
Third day in a row staying a bit late at work. Third day in a row of firefighting all morning and trying to recover and get ahead of the curve in the afternoon. It's nice that our faculty are working harder to get a jump start on the semester, but this week I'd love to get a breather.
I had to call the salon after 5 and apologize profusely for my insanity and reschedule for later.

I meant to go to practice and be social last night, but holed up in the basement with Mists of Avalon instead. Just too rung out to leave the house once finally home.

Alan's birthday was on Monday, but we celebrated on Saturday instead. I treated him to brunch of cheesy eggs and sausages, a massage with Wendy OTMH (see, massage was even still fresh on my brain!), lunch at the Victoria Gastro Pub, and then we did dinner out with the Morgensterns at Ray's the Classics in downtown Silver Spring. The food was all delicious, especially the milk chocolate mousse for dessert which had a distinct original Pennsic Chocolate Milk flavor to it, which was awesome.

Sunday we finally got around to unloading the trailer and rinsing off the tarps from war. Then Tara came over and we worked on a Viking coat/caftan for her for Coronation. We got the coat cut and sewn out of her navy blue wool in under two hours. Then I spent another two hours (or so it felt) trying to make the trimming work until Tara called it a day and said we'd meet with fresh eyes Monday night. While it took longer than I had hoped, we did finish the machine sewing of the trim/lining on Monday in 3 hours and it looks pretty cool so far, I think.  She still needs to do the hand sewing and the cuffs, but the challenge of the neckline is done at least. (It was killing me that it took me so long to grok it!)

I still haven't solidified plans for this weekend, but it will roughly involve driving the trailer to Two Dog Hill on Friday night, after depositing the trailer, driving to Danville for a memorial service for a family friend on Saturday, hanging with the family and heading back home on Sunday. It will be lovely to see family, but the even minimal planning is killing my brain at the moment.

And I think I'm still suffering from this bug that seems to want to plague me forever. Makes me want to shave my head to get cool, excpet that I spent good money on a hair stick recently.

At least the Project Runway Drag Queen challege was totally made of awesome.

Taking a quick break from work.

-Alan's war standard has finally achieved hemmed status as of last night. I had started out attempting to hand sew it, but I took out those stitches and just did it on the machine since a) some others were machine sewn b) you won't be able to tell at 28 feet, and c) it's the screwed up one anyway, so I'll contemplate hand sewing the second one. It is ironed, hemmed, ties sewn on, and folded and ready to go back to war.

-I went through my fabric stash to see what I had that would make a good pink Roman outfit. Sadly I don't have the perfect shade of pink, but I found some cotton/linen blend fabric that should do and is pink, if not PINK!

-I did a little bit more fingerloop braiding last night while watching MASH on TV Land.

-I've got a killer headache and desperately want a nap, but this afternoon is hands on with Wimba for the faculty attending the Summer Institute, so must take more IBU, put on the happy face and go back to work.

-Have to run by the chiropractor, Michael's, grocery store, and perhaps contemplate packing garb and accessories tonight. I'm thinking more and more that I want to head back Thursday night.

The one thing I remember about my dream last night was that I decided my hair was too heavy and so I had it chopped off to a very short bob. I remember liking not having to deal with the weight of a ponytail and enjoying the breezes on my neck. Since I don't visualize well, I remember the feel rather than how I think it looked.
I woke up with the same amount of hair as I went to sleep with (more or less) and didn't really want to do anything with it this morning. Perhaps I should buy a bob wig to play with...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I finished re-painting Alan's war standard this weekend, and it has been heat set (within an inch of its life), rinsed and is hanging up to dry in the hall bath. (BTW, to my guests, my sincere apologies to you all for the state of that bathroom. We don't use it much, so on first glance it was fine, but now I am appalled at my lack of hospitality and beg you all for forgiveness. Apparently I only notice these things when on my knees rinsing out the banner in the tub.) It rinsed well, but the bleed parts I had carefully ironed around so as not to heat set were actually heat set when I tossed it in the dryer for a bit. Duh! So, um, yeah, there are still the bled parts on the banner, but hopefully at 20 feet up you won't be able to tell. sigh.
Onto the hemming portion next.
But in between banner phases, I was able to catch up on some sewing. Listen, I had started hand sewing a 16th cent. high-necked smock in April 2007 before Landing Days and entered it and its pieces into the Crown A&S display that Valharic and Arielle requested of fighters and consorts. I even posted some in progress pictures up on Flickr back in May '07 or something. I've been toting this thing almost everywhere to work on it, but since I always take more than one project, it has been ignored in lieu of knitting or embroidery or, well, almost anything but it. It isn't even finished but is already stained from taking in places, that I hope I can get out in the laundry. Well I started taking it to practice on Tuesdays as my thing to work on, as knitting with wool outdoors in the 90's was a bit much. Finally, this weekend, I finished the last long seam, attached the cuffs, and am half way done hemming it. Over a year later I hope to be able to wear it at Pennsic. :)
Major Barbara was quite a wonderful production last night. I loved the costuming, even though I'm not well versed in the period, and Shaw put in some great one liners. Very interesting characters, especially Cusins. Even thought provoking in a humorous way. Is it better to do good for the wrong reasons, or to proclaim morality and do nothing. Seems pretty cut and dry, but many fall into the trap. Regardless, the last line about it's not easy to love me (Major Barbara), but it builds character... had me calling [info]theodorad "Major Theo" at the end of the play. [info]rolanddem wisely simply smiled at the jest.
So the Shakespeare Theatre Company continues to do a superb job with their normal cast and crew, but we prefer the Lansburg Theater to Sydney Harmon Hall. And now I want more clothes from the 1890's-1900's. Brit's green dress was divine, and the neat pleated skirts look like so much fun...
In ~ 36 hours I'll be on a plane bound for a week in Hawaii. w00t!
Holiday Faire has come and gone and finally I can talk about what has taken up my time and brain space lately. Miguel's cloak is done. Hooray. It was a fun project, I wish I had had time to do more decoration to the cloak, but I am glad it came out well and complete. I tried to use as many of Miguel's wonderful fiber tools to work on the cloak as possible. The blue wool from B Black & Sons arrived on Monday, so I tried to work on the decorations first. I made a ~40" silk lucet cord from some 2/30 gemstone silver silk from Halcyon to use for the laurel wreath. The wreath was couched down in place with some of the same silk using one of Miguel's fine bone needles. I also used some Splendor silks laying around in white and blue to make the edge trim out of whipcording. Otherwise it was a simple half circle cloak, inspiration taken from the mantle of Roger II of Sicily, to show the world that
[info]spanishpeacock  is a Laurel and to show him he's adored and appreciated.
The day also hosted the fine Free Scholar Prize of Master Kit ([info]theblueleader). The set-up was lovely, the candidate was dashing, and the fights entertaining. Even the pups were all decked out for the day in their blue barding. It was fun to watch with many friends to greet, and some new folks to meet.
Otherwise I spent the rest of the day chatting with friends around the event, showing off the cool stuff from the Plimoth Plantation embroidery project (like the cool gilt sylke twist threads), checking on  [info]dona_violante  and shopping a bit, geeking with  [info]cathgrace about the stuff to see at the MFA in Boston during our January trip, buying neat ribbon and tape from  [info]kass_rants , talking to [info]stringmonkey  about the knitting project for socks and gloves for Plimoth, hanging out with fun folks like  [info]duchessmel  and  [info]chargirlgenius  at the vigil and noshing on vigil food, etc. I'm sorry I missed Ragnar Ribcracker's Golden Dolphin, and  [info]gianetta's well deserved Coral Branch, but we did stay for the laureling ceremony, and then cleaned up the vigil tent quickly and got on our way toward food.
After the event, we went to  [info]kyneburh's for steaks, chicken enchiladas, and fine company. Dubis stalked me, and we had several one-sided conversations about how he's cute but touching him would make me sneeze, so he pretty much kept his distance, which was appreciated. Then we eventually made our way home when all the boys started falling asleep in their seats. It was great fun, but last night I slept for 11 hours, and I am so glad.
Lastly, I finished the backstitch sampler needlebook which was a gift from Wendy and Tricia for participating in the embroidery sessions. It was pretty fun, and their token cards were kinda cool to stitch on.
This is my May create-your-own Despair.com calendar image. While dark, it gives me giggles and a sigh every time I see it.
Titus Andronicus last night was so wonderfully bloody, it also made me smile. Apparently Theo, Roland and Alan don't agree with me about the happy ending. There's blood. And Pie. And Comeuppance. Happy. The Shakespeare Theatre did a great job, I highly recommend it for anyone not-squeamish over the age of 18. In hindsight I wish I had thought to move the play to next week, but alas, the break was lovely and welcome.
I've also done the machine sewing for some last minute lace-on sleeves for the petticoat bodies, as well as a quickie blue linen square necked doublet. I figure I'll pin it in place if I don't get around to hooks and eyes, which is entirely likely. I just realized how non-linen my wardrobe was and that push had to come to shove. I thought about taking hand sewing into the play with me for before the start and during intermission. While we deemed it would not be gouache, it would have been tacky, so hand sewing remained in the car. But I've negotiated with Alan that he'll drive us down to Williamsburg tonight after rush hour so I can sew and I'll drive back on Sunday evening when we are completely exhausted.
Prep and nerves and parking and issues aside, I am really looking forward to the grand 400th celebration at Jamestown. It will be so much fun. I'll get to chat to so many new folks, and hopefully educate a few on what those first brave souls dealt with to start our great nation, our great roots. Though Alan did say we should perhaps quiz each other in the truck on the way down on some of the major facts. May 13th 1607? Right?
Save the really interesting posts until Monday. I'll be out of contact all weekend and don't want to miss anything good. :)
I sewed, I sewed. I loaded newer pictures onto my Flickr account.
I hurt, owie. I feel another fibro-flare phasing in.
I need a nap. Lately I've been taking 2 hours naps in the afternoon/evening. Really cuts into productivity, but the napping is soooo good.
Got a referral to a pain management specialist, in downtown DC, who only does injections. Call me crazy but I'd like a more holistic approach. Must ask friends for referrals to give to my doc. sigh.
My weekend was faboo. I didn't leave our property at all between getting home on Friday night and leaving the house Monday morning. I was gonna say didn't leave the house, but we hung out outside some. I watched lots of movies on TV (King Kong, V for Vendetta, Capote, and a bunch more I can't remember) while sewing on the hand sewn smock. I've almost got all the pieces hemmed and ready for assembly. I should have used a running stitch instead of the blind hem, but since I started with blind hem I'm unwilling to switch to running stitch in the middle of the garment. Having the pattern pieces pre-hemmed will make assembly a breeze though. I was so desperate to do some assembly that I put the neck gussets onto the front of the smock last night before retiring to bed. Baby steps. I still have the back and two sleeves to hem before I can really start assembly though. At least the neck and wrist pieces are already assembled and finished with fingerloop braided linen ties and just need adding to the neck and wrist openings when I get to that point. Those parts and the hem of the garment normally take the longest. Oh how things change when entirely hand sewn. You have to think of a completely different way to put the pieces together.
As a pleasant break from my quiet weekend, Roland and Theo came over for dinner and a movie on Saturday night. We did Outback Takeaway for dinner, and made Alan fetch it since it was his idea. What would you get a soft food eater from a steakhouse? I had the crab cake appetizer and the french onion soup, with the chocolate tower for dessert shared with everyone. :) Then we retreated to the basement to watch Zoom, thanks to Theo. I was very skeptical, but I find Tim Allen amusing, and it was very very cute. It's also got Rip Torn and Chevy Chase for heavens sake. Best part was Princess Cindy Collins in her enviable array of pink outfits. Contrary to popular belief, I wouldn't want the pink poodle outfit. I mean, hello! Pink poufiness around my chest, butt, wrists and ankles? I don't think so. The fairy wings and tutu were awesome though, as was the cowgirl outfit.
In other news, I started on the waistband of my navy petticoat last night, after a lovely dinner with the Mellins and getting some progress made on the laundry front. Hooray for small, if good progress. They must have made crab meat intentionally difficult to get at since it is so tasty. Yummy crab melt and hot crab dip.
Our house is clean. So very very clean. Especially if you don't look in the sewing room. What a wonderful feeling. I'm not kidding when I say that I love hosting because then our house gets nice and clean at least once a year. Okay, the bathrooms could use a little work, but eh.
The party was wonderful. The cake was biohazardly delicious! The jelly beans were abundant and tasty, especially the sedatives and anti-depressants. The gift boxes were hella clever. (I even took an empty labeled pill bottle, filled it with junior mints, gave it to one of my chocoholic and mildly twisted faculty members, and apparently made his day.) The food was yummy and the perfect amount. The costumes were a scream, even if not enough skimpy nurses for Bob. I don't think anyone got make-up or fake blood on the walls or furniture (and there was lots of make-up and fake blood), but I'll have to double check. Speedwagon made an appearance and got passed around the zombie masses, as well as adorned with an eyeliner lobotomy scar. Our recycling bin is full to the brim of salsa jars, lambic, beer and mike's bottles, as well as soda cans, which is always a good sign of attendance if nothing else. We even had a Blackbear/Jeremy sighting and got to meet his new girl. And I even got a pre-party nap on the couch, as well as a post-party clean-up nap on Sunday afternoon. I took a few pics of the party and need to get them off my camera and onto my Flickr. Of course Corby borrowed my camera for part of the evening, so who knows what's on there.
I've also finished my outfit for Coronation, but looking at the weather, maybe I do want a palla and undertunic to fight back the cold. Damn me for not ordering wool. It's April she thinks. It'll be plenty warm, she says..  Stupid she. (BTW She=Me) Wait, I wonder if I have just the right amount of that sale smoke colored wool from BBlack&Sons? We'll see. I've also got to finish Alan's Tunica Atlantia, as well as tunicas for Freddy and Alyce started and finished. sigh. But I really want to go shopping. Perhaps next week.
Last minute things to wrangle and print, lots to sew and pack and prep. But Coronation will be tons of fun, that much is assured, even if we are huddled in our fine Roman for warmth.
And then next weekend is Night on the Town. Anyone wanna come sit with me in the morning at the MOL table?
And then is a Bandes workshop at our house that I need to promote. And then is the Costume Symposium, and then Crown and then the 400th, and then I can breathe.
And Kynny told me to find time on our calendar for sailing? When exactly is that? May 19th or June 16th look good. sigh.
Had a grand time at KA&SFest last weekend, which was largely due to the fabulous company of  [info]attack_laurel.  While I personally displayed nothing, I took a few pictures of some of the displays, for your enjoyment:
kasf07 022
Isobel and I got on the road shortly after 7pm (after I ran Belle through a car wash, since it was desperately needed) and we got to the hotel around 11ish. The room was nice at the Comfort Suites, even if the beds were a bit firm and the pillows insanely soft. We got to sleep nice and late, tumble down stairs for breakfast to bring back to the room, and take our time getting ready. Of my two packed outfits (green viking or red italian) I choose to wear my red (not pink!) Italian. I got to thinking back, and that dress is at least 7-8 years old, if not older. It hasn't gotten much wear lately, and ideally I would have put more fabric in the skirt if I had it, but on the whole, I don't think it looked that bad. And I was comfy all day. Isobel, of course, always looks fabulous, even bleary eyed and just woken up, but especially at the event on Sat. She also took pictures of me at the end of the day, so I've added them to the bottom of my 15th Cent. Middle Class Italian Renaissance Gown handout from 2000.
I talked to a bunch of folks, watched the fashion show (loved [info]azpapillion 15th disrobing, especially the explanation of the hat layers!), delivered a blue mouse to [info]melaniesuzanne , had a few meetings, attended both courts, got roped into some last minute judging, realized at the end of the day that I'd only eaten cookies since breakfast (missing lunch seems a bit of a theme for the event), and not gone to the ladies room all day. It was inspiring to see some of the many varied displays. Almost makes me want to do the Pent next year, except my pity for judges and my inherent laziness will likely stay my hand. But I do like the well-roundedness and further research it inspires. Congrats to [info]belfebe  on winning overall. There were many really good entries, so tough group to compete against. I actually had on my calendar "KAS&Fest- be prepared for more reminders of your artistic failures", which luckily with Jamestown prep isn't entirely true, but serious research hasn't happened by me recently, and in that I feel I am letting my pearl down. Where's that wagon to get back on?
But on the plus side, I did finally sit down and update my webpage with some new articles based on the pictures of projects I've taken recently. So there is a new page on Elizabethan shirt construction, and on my 16th Century Working Woman's Elizabethan outfit, in addition to the new pictures on the Italian page. That makes me feel somewhat productive. I've also updated my Calendar, good through Sept. 15th, with a few unknowns/breaks worked in.
But enough about the arts, onto the drinking. After the wonderful court, and the last minute chats about this and that, we boogied on back to the hotel to change out of costume, and into civies for dinner out. We hedged our best with Eat at Joe's Crab Shack, being so close to water and all. We started off with a couple of drinks at the bar, and moved on to some pretty tasty appetizers and entrees (Isobel's food curse held fast and ruined both her first drink, and her entree twice, and her dessert, whereas the rest of us had lovely drinks and food.) Got to hang out with Drea, Calli and Lynena and chat until way too late, and finally left as some of the last patrons to exit the restaurant. It was a grand time, and we crashed when we got back to our hotel room.
Sunday was a lovely late sleep in, interesting experiment with sausage and syrup in the microwave on styrofoam plates, and a nice relaxing drive home chit-chatting about everything, and singing along to the music. I returned the Angel of Death to her Bob after 1pm, and then scurried home to unpack, tell my Alan all about the weekend, and snuggle watching lots of ROME (heh, On Demand r0x0r) on the big screen in the basement. Random comments about bloody-minded Romans were elicited, as well as the "Oh, I love this line" for Pullo's explanation of who he'd save first if found drowning in a river. So practical that Pullo. Love the clothes, so jazzed for Coronation. But first is Gulf Wars, and I think I need to paint my toes if I plan to wear any Roman and sandals at the war.
26 February 2007 @ 01:50 pm
Okay, enough whining. Last week was packed. Monday found me abusing Theo's embroidery machine for Livia's cloak, and the embroidery on a new scarf for the Alan. While not done, I finally packed it in around 11pm to head home for bed. Tuesday night would have been laundry, but I was back at Theo's and the machine's finishing up the machine done details on said cloak. Wednesday was a lovely dinner out but a disappointing play with incapable understudy in lead role. Thursday I called to check on practice and it was called off, which was wonderful so I could do more work on the cloak assembly. Friday night was also final cloak assembly including whipcording 3.5 yards of silk trim for the edging, I was only up until 3am. Insert random pauses for heating pad usage and better living through chemistry.
Sunday we awoke to cute light fluffy snow. Alan was wise and shoveled the front walk and driveway in shifts. So he went outside to shovel 3 times, but it was in smaller batches, ultimately better for the back, right? I spent the entire day being a non-productive bum. I spent all day in fleecy pants and top and made brunch (turkey bacon and cheesy eggs), snow-cream (southern delicacy of snow, milk, sugar, and vanilla*), did 5 loads of laundry, took a 2 hour nap, and made half of a nalbound mousie. The rest of the time I spent vegged out in front of the tube, or watching the snow blanket form around us. I did take a few more pictures of the thick snow to share with the FL parents and Hawaii sister, also to be uploaded later. I think we got about 6 inches before the rain came and started tamping it down a bit. Most sad of all, the roads were all cleared last night, so there was no delay or cancellation of work today for moi. At least Alan kept a nice fire glowing in the den all day for warmth and ambiance, and in case of the slight chance that we had power outage.
Tomorrow morning I have a massage scheduled with Wendy of the magic hands. And oh how I need it.
*Like lobster is more of a delicacy to those not from New England, snow cream is a delicacy only to those who don't get snow often, like southerners.
14 February 2007 @ 09:51 am
So, yesterday and last night's winter weather has struck, and Alan was up shoveling 3-4 inches of sleet off the driveway this morning. Unfortunately the sleet that fell yesterday afternoon (after I shoveled off the heavy snow) is still packed down and glued to the pavement. It's a good deal treacherous out there. The icemelt salt mix is only doing so much. Hooray for the university closing down for the day. I'm more than content to stay home and snuggled under a layer of fleece and not facing the elements. Alan's going into the office for a little while, so I told him to take Belle instead of Serenity so he'll have 4x4 and traction control on the way to the Metro station. He's just not allowed to dent her.
I hope to get in the sewing room and make some progress on my projects, unfortunately quite a few of them and no free weekends. That will be dependent on my right wrist feeling less achy, thanks to the shoveling of the heavy snow yesterday. Perhaps a thermacare wrap is in my future. The hands are pretty stiff and sore themselves as well. Is it the weather or just overuse? who knows. Ever since Friday they've been feeling rather weak. Made getting stuff out of the basement a little awkward on Friday, and hammering of tent stakes was better done by others, but there you go.  Right, off to go check the pharmacy for options and the sewing room for productivity.
Happy Valentine's Day one and all, not in a Hallmark way, but a courtly love way. :)
Had a lovely weekend. Friday Night was delivery sushi with Thjora and amazement at the wonderful basement that is actually one solid color. whoohoo. I didn't have an event on my schedule this weekend, deciding that I needed a break before the rush of Feb. Thursday night some folks had convinced me to drop by the local event for a few hours to be social, but come Saturday morning the enthusiasm had waned. I honestly wasn't thrilled at the idea of paying full price when I wasn't planning on staying all day and eating. So, I was lured by my errands and Arundel Mills, and went shopping all day instead. Found a great funky fabric for new curtains for the basement bar windows. I also got two new pairs of shoes (not at Nine West as alas they had nothing to tempt me that fit) but some lovely red pointy toed flats and some basic dark brown pumps from Liz C. Got a few new pretty tops, a new tan pair of pants and a new pair of jeans. Hooray!
I do occasionally have problems with getting in a color rut during shopping trips. Last August one day of shopping at Pennsic had me buy two green mugs and a green glass and something else green that day, while wearing my green viking. Two years ago at the Sheep and Wool Fest I was drawn to anything in a particular shade of pink. Saturday was coral/salmon. Found two tops I loved, a coordinating silk scarf, and had to put down several shoes and a jacket in that color. Was very odd. But I went in search of red shoes and brought one pair home, so that at least was a success and break from the possible salmon rut.
Saturday night after dropping off my event bailing/fun-shopping partner at her place, I headed home, and picked up Outback Take-away for the crew at home, and spent the rest of the evening hanging out with Thjora and Isobel and geeking on a number of topics. mmm... knitting.
Sunday dawned earlier than I wished and saw me on the road to a bodice fitting workshop at Giuli's with Leofwynne. That went surprisingly well, and we all got a little Tommy time and patterns drafted and details discussed, and all sorts of fun. Then our fair hostess had to feed the boy and get to a baby shower while Leofwynne and I went shopping at G-Street Centerville. I found some pretty lace for parts of the project, some fabric I think can be cool for a sheer partlet, as well as some small chunks of wool that I hope will work for some doublets as well. Got home, washed fabric, napped, and rounded out the day with a relaxing low key dinner.
Sadly I'm up a pound this week, but I did have chinese food two nights in a row (despite my attempt to order mostly healthy steamed food, ie not Generals Tso's) and I was seduced by the blooming onion and sauce and the chocolate covered raspberry gelatin sticks I picked up at Giant, which are now thankfully gone... into my belly! So, I'm seriously trying to be good and back on the wagon and more fruits and veggies, etc.
So, I've finally finished taking in my green petticoat bodies. Took in an inch overall, a half inch at each side seam. Fits much better now, although with the hopefully incredibly shrinking me I might have to add in a center back seam for the next take in, or just suck it up and make a new set. At least it will be wearable this weekend for Gardiner's Yule. I really need to add those additional eyelets to the red wool skirt waistband as well. Oh, and then hems will have to happen before, oh, let's just aim for May. :)
I've also been chatting and scheming with Giuli and Leofwynne on 1540's Venetian goodness. I even found some, wait for it, pink subtly patterned cotton in my stash that has both good body and a nice sheen that should work for it. Even better, I think I can use my bodies pattern for the petticoat bodies with minor alterations to work for this dress as well. Will need more boning, I'll have to dig up some lining/interlining fabric, and find something for use as a partlet and perhaps a nice small balzo to hide the hair...
For those who couldn't make Twelfth Night
So many costuming plans, not enough time or energy. That and the sucking nature of the TV and the comfy chair. If I sit down without a project, I'll just become locked in. If I have a project with me when I sit, I'll often be productive. This explains the vast amount of jetsam of project pieces near the den TV. But I did get to catch up on the Season 2 opener for Rome on demand, and the most recent Top Chef. Wow for getting kicked off due to a technical breach of contract they probably never read all the way through. First one on Project Runway last season, and another on this season of Top Chef. That'll teach you to read the fine print.
Now to ponder outfits for Coronation for Alan and myself. Alan has specifically stated wanting a Roman outfit for April 7th, so gotta get those gears turning as well. Sounds more and more like my idea of a 1600's jacket and pink skirt are falling to the wayside.
Considering the gluttony (and siren call of the napping couch) that is Thanksgiving, and then all the foods at Foods and Feasts, it's truly a miracle that I only gained a pound this week.  Whoohoo.  I also am officially wearing pants the next size down today. Even my sweater and blazer are looser. Went shopping on Wed and again last night and have a few smaller pants that should carry me for a while. Will also have to contemplate at what point to weed the larger sizes out of the closet. Right now they are just taking up space, but I fear that as soon as I donate them, weight will come back on.  Pessimistic? Me? Never.
My current to do list is finish reading my book and to do Xmas shopping and cards for folks. We're still not sure what we're even doing for the holiday, but I know that I get a week and a half off, and I am greatly looking forward to it.
