34

I've decided that Sunday birthdays are the best.

I got to take Friday off work to give myself a three day weekend and indulged myself in; sleeping in, a massage, shoe shopping and new made-in-America kicks for dog walking, a late lunch reading by myself, a nap, and then Indian food for dinner.

Saturday was more sleeping in, a liesurely trip to Holiday Faire for fun visiting, early birthday wishes, and a little shopping. After getting home and walking the pup we settled into the basement to introduce Chris (a high school friend and our second longterm guest while he finds a place to live in the area) to the wonder that is Firefly.

Today was the best for my actual birthday. I slept in very late and Alan brought me breakfast in bed, cold Diet Coke, mango sausages and eggs with Gouda. Then I got to check FB and pet the dog while he cleaned up the kitchen. :) We went out shopping to ultimately get me a new laptop (pink Viao!) look at other fun electronics, get noms for the pup and coffee for himself. I managed a quick nap before we took off to the Snuggery at the Old Brogue to see Iona with Beth Patterson in concert, which was awesome. The bangers and mash were tasty, the Irish Whisky cake with Jameson's ice cream is almost worth the drive alone, but the music was great fun too.

And the evening has been topped off with a visit from the Morgensterns who also brought apple pie and oatmeal cookie dough. Fresh warm pie with ice cream then fresh warm cookies and then fun conversation makes for an evening of win.

And now I think it is time for bed. Must remember to turn back on the alarm for tomorrow.
(I just wish said new laptop would come back from the Windows Update it thinks it is doing. Sigh.)

1009-mousehole 004
Elizabeth shows knitting tips

I only took a few pictures at Mousehole on Saturday (as I work very hard to keep the camera as hidden as possible) but did capture a few moments such as knitting instruction, Jimmy teaching the newest recruit, and all the ducks in a row.

It was a lovely event, despite the inclement weather. Since it was at least warm whilst it was rainy, we soldiered on and some of the gentlemen even fought some training bouts in the lighter showers. The company was lovely as we took shelter under the two big shades, giving time for nice civilian pursuits such as embroidery, knitting, wood carving, and hand sewing. The food as always was extremely yummy, and I even have some of the left-over tarts in the fridge. Alas there was no left-over duck, because it was tasty and devoured.

We were late to the clean-up on Sunday luxuriating in sleeping in and pancakes and bacon from brunch back at Mike and Kirsten's. The tents were still drying when we belatedly arrived so it wasn't too late, but I did have to carefully pack two pieces of canvas to allow for air flow for final drying in the trucks. Alan then went directly home, and I zipped over to Richmond for Catherine Grace and Ansel's house warming/anniversary party before heading home to rescue the Ladybug from boarding. The party was small but fun, with more amazingly tasty food. The house is gorgeous! I totally want Isaac's room, and have serious envy of CG's sewing room. Loved the GST shrine. I've been carrying mine with me too much to make a nice display of it.

Anyway, great weekend, amazing friends, and yummy food.

KWCS
I had a great time at KWCS in Philly this weekend, due entirely to wonderful friends and interesting classes.

Friday night was a fun dinner and hanging out with Drea and Calli, and the food was delicious. The applewood smoked ham calzone was super yummy.

Saturday I skipped the first class I had on my schedule, but I was moving slow and taking my time. oh well. It allowed me time to chat and visit with folks before settling in for a day of learning.

I really enjoyed the Pleated and Embroidered 16th cent Shirts class. I can see why others might have complaints, but considering the information covered, I thought it was an excellent intro class to the evolution of some shirt construction and basic into to pleatwork embroidery without going into too much mind-boggling technical detail.

I also loved the unintentional companion classes of the Ins and Outs of Extant Garments by Drea Leed, and Working with a Mundane Textile Collection. They showed great examples of extant pieces, some of the problems of recreating exactly from those pieces due to different postures now vs. then, some of the cool details found when taking a close look, what materials to prepare when you have the option to look at extant pieces from a museum collection (pencil, paper, gloves, calipers, markers, scale, etc.) There was also a bit of the lifting of the veil on the state of museum collections, problems with cataloging, the reasons to be as specific as possible in your questions, etc. Both had different foci, but were wonderful classes.

Alas I skipped the V-neck gown class, which I heard was insanely crowded, to sprang geek with Kyle from the East and look at his various attempts to recreate the pink and green argyle garters from the MFA, both playing with scale and patterning. He's on a good path and has an appointment to view them, which I know he'll adore. So cool!

Then I went shopping and got so distracted that I was a tad late to teaching my own class. Oops! Luckily I wasn't too late and since it was the last hour of the day I could go over the hour allottment. I hated that I felt like a monkey on crack when teaching and bouncing all over the place on the details, but did try to cover as much as possible. I wish I had more focus, but there were wonderful folks who asked great questions that let me fill in the blanks that I had skipped over. I was also grateful for the interest in butterfly token sales and that most of my handouts when away. I now only have 4 more butterfly tokens, and another decent donation I need to send up to Plimoth. Whoo!

Saturday night was enjoyable hanging out with the Spanish Peacocks with James and Calli fetching dinner back to the hotel, fun partying with amazing ladies who I rarely get quality time with, not enough sangria, various states of undress, and good times. We stayed up far too late, but had such fun that it was completely worth it. Alas I didn't join in on some of the puppy-piling as I had a slight tickle in my throat I didn't want to share. This turned out to be a very good idea as I've now been home sick and slow for the past 3 days. Bleargh.

Sunday I took the Frauenrock class, which had a lot of great information in it, and loved the aha moments of the hat portion of the hours. Whooo! I then spent the rest of the time hanging out and chatting with folks, and got so distracted chatting and comparing notes with Drea L. that I ended up skipping the Wappenrock class. Rats! Ah well, I hope for the notes to help me out when I get to that stage.

Kit and I took off around 5pm as things wound down, and I blathered to her the whole way home about the different classes I took, what value I got out of them, etc. She had the bright idea of calling Jim and Sandy as we were within 20 minutes of their place when we started thinking food. Though they had eaten, there were leftovers for us and we had a wonderful few hours stopping and visiting with them and chatting. Dinner and fun companionship is far better than the travel plaza we hit on the way up. We even got some beagle love. Made it home around 9pm to crash all too soon.

I realized that some of this pedagogy and putting together of classes for a coherent teachable moment from work has rubbed off on me. I did some mental comparing of classes and where things could be improved, what went right, what gave a good feel and what was a tad off-putting. I need to analyze any future classes I do from this point of view as it seemed some were more enjoyable and exciting than others and most of that has to do with delivery rather than interest in the subject.

Must think further on this, but for now another nap on the comfy couch of doom.

Sapphire was fun.

We drove down early Saturday morning to avoid the traffic, because Memorial Day traffic sux. We set up the tent, celebrated Susan's 16th birthday with cake and singing, hung out, caught Dominyck's surprise white-scarfing with the camera, went to order meetings, braided pretty Princess hair, and made Turkish dish of meat in an Eadric pot over the Eadric brazier. Spent the evening hanging out with friends- down at the deRath camp, up with Theo and Roland, and then over at the Caer Mear bardic.

Slept like a log on Saturday night, and woke leisurely on Sunday morning. Hung out, braided hair, braided hair, and braided hair, had a lovely chat with Emma, did a bit of Heir errands, and then hit the ground running for the Rose Tourney -fund raising for Arielle, bringing the signing book around some, chatting with wonderful generous folks, getting caught in the merchants for the main deluge, hit up others for sentiments and cash, and did some counting with outside verification on the funds raised. We micro-packed, went out to dinner at Mario's with Thjora, Antonio and Brian, and then came back to pack the then mostly dry canvas and get on the road home. We made it home by 10pm, partially unpacked, showered and crashed in bed.

Monday was sleeping late (while Alan unpacked the rest of the truck), playing with the new Sunsetter awning and pre-installation futzing, picked up the happy Ladybug pup from the All Dogs Club, and worked on installing the awning with help from Roland during a deluge. We got the awning up, spent some time hanging out under the shade listening to the rain, before heading over to the Morgenstern's for dinner, fine company and soaking in the hot tub.

Thus was our weekend- sunshine, ticks, road trip, friends, rain, good deeds, visiting, music, chocolate cake, hair-braiding, picture taking, cooking, and all... including the lack of coherence and eloquence.

Classes for University of Atlantia Session #75 hosted by the Canton of Crois Brigte in Winston-Salem NC are posted and pre-registration is open. Looks to be yet another good set of classes.

Since Eldred will pass the figuritive baton to me at this session, I thought this might be my last opportunity to teach for a while. I've got a class on the Plimoth Jacket scheduled for the first hour (woof, mornings). I'll need to re-work the initial handout and determine what can be covered in an hour, and shift the focus from participation to the overall project.

That being said, I think the Ladybug pup is going to hate me by June 14th with four weekends away in a row- Sapphire, Plimoth, UofA, and Golden Rose. I don't see a "No Pets" policy for Golden Rose, but I fear bringing the 'Bug might be worse for all of us. Must ponder. At least Alan will be home while I'm away forPlimoth and UofA.

Sunday of CC27 was fun, even if I didn't get there until 1pm, I didn't leave until almost 11pm, so $4/hr of enjoyment.

For dinner I was graced with the wonderful presence of: [info]silverstah , [info]chargirlgenius , [info]trystbat , [info]sarahbellem , [info]demode , [info]seekatesew , [info]lindseyerin37 , [info]angldst (briefly- she was packing to go), [info]jubilima , and of course the Supreme Court Judge of costume fashion, [info]attack_laurel . (Oh, and since I was taking notes, I got tasked to post this list of impressive women.)

I was lazy and put on my super-bright pink wig with some pink Roman and went in that. I got a Hall Costume ribbon at the registration table, which was a bit surprising, and yet I forgot to get someone to take a good picture of me in it. I changed after dinner into the Snow white wrap dress, but again forgot to photo myself. Eh, I was there to observe, not be observed (as much as the pink wig screamed LOOK AT ME!)

I did get some fun time really hanging out with [info]silverstah  and [info]chargirlgenius  in their fabulous 15th Century gowns, which was a refreshing change from SCA event. They, obviously looked gorgeous. I had a fun visit with [info]kass_rants  at the Reconstructing History booth, chatting and being silly, even if I did get to give [info]nq3x  a bit of a shock in saying hi. (hee hee!) I also got to see Drea and stanci and chat with them some, although apparently it was too late to catch Drea in costume.

Some observations:
-CostumeCon doesn't seem to be really suitable for daytripping. Take note all ye newbies like me who might be local to the next one, it was fun but is obviously making for a late night, and I gotta work tomorrow (eep! today)
-It''s okay to pack hand projects, as there was a lot of sitting and chatting that could have been good embroidery time.
-Posting of schedules online would be key to letting local folks know the value of full attendance.

And now that my set of photos on Flickr are done loading, I'm off to bed. I just wish they were better in quality, as I hate my flash and have a crappy zoom. Ah well, fun was had.

CC27
Seriously folks. Is there a schedule available anywhere? I've combed the site, and there are parties in the ConSuite mentioned, but aside from the Sunday designation for the Historical Masq, and that one party starts after the Masquerade or 10pm, I got nothing.

Sigh, guess I'll show up sometime on Sunday, plan to stay late-ish, and try not to worry about it. I'm also thinking of maybe coming up Saturday night after 6pm, but I guess we'll see. Depends likely on how terrible the allergens are for MD Sheep & Wool. (I like having a schedule planned out, even if I don't stick to it. This is hella frustrating.)

Right now I'm thinking of Sheep and Wool on Saturday during part of the day, and possibly Saturday night at CC27. Sunday, most of the day at CC27. Alan's decided to skip Crown, so he can watch the pup and do whatever he plans to this weekend and I don't have to plan a day care or returns home to check on her.

Or I could skip the Con and stay home to nap and embroider... hmm...

PS: Is this level of planning for a CCon typical and it's expected that folks just show up and stuff happens, and I just have unrealistic expectations 3 days before an event?

Ymir
I would like to take this time to remind everyone that Alan is a saint, and I am a very lucky woman.

Our attempt to leave on Friday night was thwarted. We were very late in getting packed and on the road, and by the time we had dropped off Ladybug at the All Dogs Club, it was 8:30 before we got on the road. Once we were south on the beltway approaching the Wilson Bridge I remembered that I had forgotten the chairs I promised to pack for Gabrell and I to use at the MOL table. No big I think, I'll call friends who might be able to rustle up seating. Then I remembered that I had forgotten my antibiotics. Previous experience in doing so taught me that getting replacements is not easy at all. So I told Alan to turn around and head home. Since by the time we got home, recollected all I had forgot, and got back on the road, we wouldn't be arriving until 4am. So we decided to sleep in our own bed and get up early on Saturday and drive down in the morning. The hotel was very obliging when I called to let them know we wouldn't arrive until tomorrow, and then I crawled in bed and crashed. I also realized when we got home that I had left the directions at home as well, so it was good that we turned around when we did. sigh.

4am came, and we were up, showered and on the road by 5am. Alan proved his saintliness by driving the whole way as I slept pretty much the whole way. I tried to get up and drive the second half, but I couldn't keep my eyes open. We got on-site by 11am, and were changed in time for morning Royal Court.

The day ended up being a fine one. I collected the beautiful cast butterfly tokens from Cunning for my Plimoth Embroidered Jacket fundraiser, and ended up off-loading 20 of them on Saturday. I also spent a good chunk of time at the MOL table on the armoured combat list. There were 74 fighters, 7 lists, and I didn't terribly screw up mine afterall. I was really proud of Gabrell working at the MOL table. He handled 2 of the 7 round robin lists with applomb, and was very good at helping with the authorizations and sign-ins. He was also an attentative guard for Her Majesty during morning court. A very useful guy to have around. Kynny took over as Earl Marshal from Roland, and will do a good job

This event was sometimes referred to the "Out of the Woodwork" event, since many folks not seen in ages made an appearance. Aside from the attendance of Anton, Luned and Emer for HP's pelicaning, and Nia behind the MOL table, we were blessed with the presence of Benefse, Derbhilla, Adrianna Broussard, Johan Krieg, Hrothgar, Vyv, and others who I can't recall at the moment. It was so good to see old friends and acquaintainces.

Congratulations to Rosalind and Gaston, and Marc and Alianor for jobs well done as the landed baronage for Windmasters' Hill and Sacred Stone. Congratulations also to Girard and Guenievre, and Axel and Jeanmaire, who have the faith of their populace and Crown to hold those lands instead. I'm sure all will do the challenging job well.

After court and congratulations to friends, we exited the hall, and headed to the hotel to check-in, and headed to dinner at the Squire's Pub with the Olney's. Dinner was yummy, milkshakes from Cook-Out were awesome, and we had a great time hanging out back at the hotel until far too late.

Alan proved his saintliness again by not waking me when he had work calls in the middle of the night, and also drove the second half of the way home so I could sleep again, as my eyes were again having a tough time staying open. After collecting the 'Bug, we were home long enough to unpack and rest a bit before our lovely evening with Beth Patterson at the Old Brogue.

1108-crown 065

Congratulations to Logan and Esa, Atlantia's new Prince and Princess. Though I do not know her, two Pennsics ago (now Princess) Esa earned a warm place in my heart with her lovely smile and fabulous sense of humor.
Congrats also to Vlad and Kalissa for making it to the finals. You are a joy to watch, and I had fun being your paparazzi. Thank you also for your wonderful hospitality during the day.

I was lucky enough to spend most of the day with Bera and Molly Wobbles hanging out, chatting, checking out the arts, and having a lovely time in court and later at dinner. (Gracie, I wouldn't have skipped your undoubtedly fabulous feast for anything less than my Bera's company, so my apologies, but I had to.) I got to braid Anneke's and Padraigin's hair, and visit with many many friends, though not everyone. The drive was worth it for the company alone, but the tourney was well fought, the weather was lovely, and folks looked fabulous.

I also was able to enjoy the colorful views on the various legs of my drives, admiring all the Fall leaves in their ranges of colors; yellows, oranges and reds with many spots of green still about. It was also a lovely part of the drives the past two weekends. I adore the Fall for the crispness on the air and the colors in abundance. I have a poster of the Virginia mountains in the Fall over my desk thanks to Virginia is for Lovers and Kirsten's acquiring it for me many years ago. I was also lucky enough to use Two Dog Hill as my way-station for crash space and company on Friday and Saturday nights, thus giving me more puppy love time and the chance to see the changes to the yard in person, as well as enjoy French toast for breakfast on Sunday. Hooray! Finally I spent my Sunday drive stopping at a few antique places and picking up the occasional gem, a cool plate that spoke to me and finding an old bread box to hide my snack counter contents within.

But I am so tired now. And it doesn't help that poor Alan essentially worked all weekend. He was on a work call for 13 hours on Saturday, 6 hours on Sunday, and was back on the phone this morning when I woke up to drag my tired butt into work. *pout*

Tonight I need to knuckle down and seriously make my Halloween costume for Friday. I'm also trying to decide if I should temporarily dye my hair darker for the occasion or not. Tuesday night might require a visit to JoAnn's for some small accessories before practice to complete the ensemble. I'm so excited but need to get it done. I meant to play in the sewing room on my costume yesterday after I got home, but instead I succumbed to a nap and the embroidery. My fingertips were a little numb when I went to bed from playing with the embroidery, but they have thankfully recovered.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had a blast at St. Luke's Artisan Fair on Saturday, even if I was extremely late in arriving. I was a couple of hours late in getting up and leaving the house, and then I got stuck in some traffic on 95 just before the 295 exit around Richmond, locking me in. The plus side of traffic is that I was able to drive with my knees and braid my hair during the creeping up to the accident site. I had also forgot to pack an Acorn, but luckily I remembered looking at the map on Friday night, so I got there just fine. As soon as I checked in and was getting dressed I wished I had brought Roman. It was really freaking warm in the hall, despite being the end of October. But I got dressed, found many wonderful friends, partook of the day-board, since I was starving, and sat to chat.
I've uploaded the pictures I took, though I did not manage to photograph everything, and have to declare my favorite to be Team Cheese.
 Vitha put together a very compelling display, and it was darn tasty too. The depth and breadth shown was very impressive.  I even took the plunge and tried the liquid whey and the buttermilk, in addition to all of the cheeses offered. She had 5 cheeses available, some pressed whey, fresh butter, and whey bread. It was awesome. The cheese press made by Marcellus and Arghylle was frosting on the cupcake, and really made it a wonderful comprehensive display.
I also really liked Sophia's food display, and declare the spinach tarts my favorites, but the sauce for the pork was also full of nom. I grabbed one of the booklets of recipes to flip through and then I will likely give it to [info]theodorad  and try to encourage her to try some of them for a tasting panel to include myself. :) I also seized upon the opportunity to flip through her pre-view copy of Patterns of Fashion 4 at the end of the day (THANK YOU [info]mmcnealy !) and was surprisingly able to keep all salivation in my mouth and off the book. *drool* I wanted before, and now I seriously WANT!
Other favorites included [info]tattycat 's chocolate display of great intensity, as well as other only in Spain topics. Yum, um wow, need more of that whipped cream from the day-board and more water. Truly wonderful and she demonstrated great knowledge of the subject. I loved Mariana's casting display to include samples of cast tokens, buttons, etc. as well as the carved moulds on display. That was amazing. I am also a fan of [info]baronessadriana 's stitching samples from the Herjolfsnes finds, Kaleeb's natural dyed wool samples, and an embroidered purse using the dyed wools, as well as [info]orlacarey 's dolls.  Then I had fun visiting the various embroidery samplers on display with [info]belfebe  and being amazed at the quality, variety and research presented. Janina's was lovely and impressively meticulous.
I also had a grand time showing off my pin cushion to anyone interested (and likely some not) as well as the pretty GST threads and my current project of a panel for my MIL (the center pink is almost complete now). I also was finally able to wear my hand-sewn shift with my petticoat bodies, which made me pleased, if a bit warm. Of course I've now got plans swimming in my head of an embroidered shift like the one in the V&A with the pink creatures all over it... the problem with successful artisan fairs is the bevy of inspiration afterward with only the same amount of time on hand.
Since Gracie was a little done, and the Moore's were my hosts for the evening, we boogied out a little early and headed to the Lone Star for dinner. The food was tasty, Gracie was charming and the company was fabulous. And then we were joined by John, Deedee and Amanda which only improved the evening, not to mention a peacock and peahen sighting. About an hour and a half later the kids were done and we punched out in a hurry counting ourselves lucky and extremely well fed. Then I had [info]bdeb 's entertaining company on the ride back to their place, and we stayed up chatting and enjoying each others company until after midnight when it was crashy time. Morning came and there was more playing with Gracie and drinking the wonderful Diet Coke of great happiness, and hanging out some more before I got on the road home and left the hospitable Moore's to the rest of their day.
Fun fun weekend!
I had a lovely, if slightly lazy in parts, weekend. Alan, unfortunately, woke up on Friday morning not feeling well at all. We decided to support Green Leader in her class at UofA and skip C'ville MTA on Sunday to "accomplish stuff around the house."
Friday night Alan was not feeling well that I let him nap and go to bed early and I went out to dinner with [info]rolanddem  and [info]theodorad  in downtown Silver Spring at Ceviche' . The food was yummy, though they've discontinued the toasted corn kernel crack they had as the equivalent of chips and salsa that was truly habit forming. I ordered and ate the classis Peruvian ceviche' (Ceviche' at Ceviche'? Say it ain't so Joe) and tried the empanada trio instead of relying on my favorite Aji Gallino creamy chicken dish. We had a great time just hanging out, even if Theo did want to call out to [info]kyneburh  as she felt overrun by the Rolo-Gen brain and lacking in support for the Kyna-Theo-Alan brain. We also discussed UofA and made a plan to carpool to be more gas efficient since they had to take the Suburban for the 10' poles anyway.
UofA was fun, I mostly hung out with friends, played a bit with my knitting, picked up my new cherry slate frame from
[info]spanish_peacock  (drool!) and helped out in the 20' up class as I could. The only class I ended up taking was [info]terrshee 's class on the Nine Worthies, which I thought was wonderful. She focused on a set of nine worthies (3 Pagan, 3 Biblical, and 3 Christian) but mentioned others and had three pages of a bibliography. It was interesting to see some of the common characteristics then that are still valid and sought after today. She listed Courtesy, Frankness, Largess, Hardiness, Prowess, and Loyalty. Courtesy wasn't defined and being nice to the lessers and opening doors for ladies, but instead having those courtly (or politically savvy) traits that will get you ahead in the world. Don't (get caught) being a jerk, but also pay attention to the system and play it so that you advance. (Please note that I do not see this inherently as a bad thing, it matters not the worthiness of your cause if your manner will not get folks to listen and side with you.) Frankness wasn't defined as honesty and directness, but breeding and bloodlines. Even today, to some being a Kennedy is a good thing, and to others being a Bush is. Many of the worthies were of good breeding, if not heirs themselves. Largess (rewarding one's followers), Hardiness (determination), Prowess (mad skillz) and Loyalty (willingness to serve, within reason) all ring true in what we'd like to see in our leaders even now. We appreciate those who pull themselves up by their bootstraps to improve their lot in life, as it inspires us to do likewise. Of course we also like to kvetch that our lot is harder and denigrate those pampered trust fund babies in our weaker moments. In a way it is kinda nice to see that some things haven't changed all that much as far as human nature and ideals are concerned. Regardless, the class got me thinking and I guess that's a sign of a good class.
We then had a lovely dinner with [info]theblueleader  and Cyndi at Friday's before getting on the road back home. Many many thanks to Roland and Theo for the ride. It was greatly appreciated. We were pitifully in bed before 10pm and I crashed out solidly. Sadly Alan tossed and turned and coughed, etc. with the incoming sinus infection (not that I was disturbed) so I found him Sunday morning crashed out in the basement. The idea that we'd get stuff done around the house was a nice one, but we ended up napping and being lumps for most of the day. Alan did get the front lawn mowed, and I made lots of progress on the heel of my second sock which gets it much closer to done so I can block them, photo them, and send them up to Plimoth.
Thankfully Alan secured an appointment with his doctor today and went and got needed antibiotics. I swung by the grocery store on the way home to pick up a few essentials, like more chicken noodle soup, before coming home to check on the sickie.
Finished my little 2"x2" sample embroidered pincushion top. I still need to decide if I'm going to add any spangles to it before sewing the backing and stuffing it. Overall I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, though I'll definitely do the vine work differently. I was impatient and used the stitch I knew rather than taking the time to learn something new.
More pictures of it in-progress are available in my Projects set on Flickr.
We went to Lochmere's 20th Baronial Birthday on Saturday for a few hours to brave the rain and hang out with friends. My feet were wet and muddy, but the temperature was mild, and the company was amazing. I got to chat with those from far (Tamma and Terry) and near (Mikey and Tara), and work on my second sock of the stockings I've been knitting since Feb. I also informally officially took [info]gabrell  has my protege. He truly has the heart for service, as witnessed by him constantly braving the rain to check in to see if Her Majesty needed anything, helping out with the cards for the rapier tournament, and doing whatever was needed. I have every faith in him, and only hope I can be a good mentor and example.  We'll do something more official when I get a belt woven for him and we can get the household together for it, so I gave him my favorite yellow sprang bag as a placeholder.
We spent Saturday night up visiting with the Toscano's for dinner and conversation. I got a good dose of beagle love from Pearl and Boogaloo, did some more knitting, and pawing through Sandy's Dress in Ireland book. Sandy fed us some tasty pot roast, and we had Craig and Frances for company for the evening, and a great time was had by all.
Sunday morning, after a good long session of sleeping in, I randomly decided to document and archive the fridge-art. It was really about time, there was no room for any new incoming photos, and soon I'd have to clear it whenever we get to the scheduling and installing of the new kitchen cabinets so nothing gets lost or destroyed.
Here is the fridge in the before state:
I made sure to take close-ups of the front top and bottom, as well as the left and right sides before I cleared, cleaned, put the photos and postcards away in a photo album, and rearranged the magnets back on the fridge.
While I was cleaning off the fridge, [info]theodorad  calls to see if Alan has time to spend with [info]halowenslut  playing with swords in the backyard. She also invited us over for dinner for pot roast. After I was done laughing, I cheerfully accepted the dinner offer since I'm not too good to refuse Theo's cooking, ever, and know it would be different but equally as tasty. And so another fine evening was spent in the company of friends, joined also by Tara, Bess, Schecky and Ziggy. My belly is full of yummy home cooked food, and so I must now go to bed.
hmm... nom nom nom
Wow, what a weekend. Some have already mentioned portions of our weekend, but it was food and friends heavy, and both were enjoyed.
And here I sit, finishing the laundry, watching the Discovery channel, and playing on the computer. Good, but tiring weekend, that's for sure.
We haz mice.
We've seen a mouse periodically about the house, mainly running along the edge of the foot of the bar, and also along the ledge in the den. Small, cute, fuzzy and gray with a white belly. Well, this morning at 4am, as I was up nursing some chamomile tea and gatorade to battle a sensitive tummy after evicting dinner that did not agree with me, I finally saw two. They were playing on the brick face of the fireplace up near the ceiling, scampering around a bit. They had also worked down to the floor and scampered around some there. No shame.
Now these little guys are really freaking bold. Last week one of them crawled up on Alan's arm rest on the lazyboys in the basement, as we were watching TV. Today, as I've been taking a day off to nurse said sensitive tummy, at least one of them has been running laps along the ledge in the den. It has even stopped and stared at me while nibbling on something near the cordless phone charging station, and I had a conversation with said mouse about that now is the time for eviction and I went looking for pest control places, mouse traps, and such.
Alan, for what it is worth, simply points them out and reminds me that they are taunting me. I told him that he is supposed to be the protector of the house, and is failing. So he's ordered something called Riddex and we'll see, though many reviews are unfavorable. If it doesn't work, then I might just have to break down and by the electric shock humane mouse trap. As a softie, I'd prefer to repel the mice than kill them, but I'm willing.
sigh. Perhaps I just need the [info]attack_laurel to visit and round them all up and export elsewhere.
Assessment was fun. We daytripped from Corby and Thjora's place, and the trip was a bit long, but not too bad. I attended curia with Kit, set-up a bit at the Artisan's Row, visited Timmoch on his vigil, and taught a few folks about sprang. I had also printed out a few pictures from the Plimoth Embroidery Project as well as some of the extant items we've seen at the MFA, to show to folks. But I had a lovely time spending it chatting with folks, both on and off-site.
And now my protein lacking brain is done with writing, so there you go...
