For the next three days we are headed down to Williamsburg to volunteer at Jamestown Settlement for their Foods and Feasts event. We'll definitely be there Thursday and Friday, but Saturday is up in the air. Thankfully the weather report is dry and positive.

Then on December 10th we are headed up to Plimoth for the Jacket's Grand Reveal. The invitations are gorgeous, I gasped when I first opened the envelope from the mail, and I can't wait for the party. It will be nice to see some of the hard workers again, in addition to the Vega showgirl sparkly glory that is the jacket. No flash photography is allowed, but I'll see if I can get permission and my camera to take some pictures, and maybe even a short video of the jacket in motion.

I also finally got more tokens for fundraising. I'm sorry I missed some folks at Holiday Faire for sales. If you want a cast bird or butterfly for the holidays, let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thank you to everyone who have been so supportive already.

We survived the Children's Day at Jamestown on Saturday. It was fun and fairly relaxed, mostly hanging out by the Devon Oven as Sandy made bread and the rest of us just talked and tried to get the kids to play with some games and leave the chickens alone. It was great to have Catherine and the kids around too, to help some kids play games and to just be around and being children, making their own fun. Also cool to see Dangerboy and his parents, and to hear that Dangerboy was having a great time. History is fun! Good day.

We went back to do a little shopping in the gift shop and came home with some new books. And upon CG's recommendation we went to the Bass Pro Shop in Ashland on the way home to eat lunch at the Fish Company restaurant. That was some good eats, and Alan naturally saw the big fish tank behind the bar and asked if he could have one. I asked him if he was going to quit his job to manage a Bass Pro Shop... After lunch we then spent some time walking around window shopping, I took a couple of chances at the shooting gallery, and toyed with the idea of buying stuff for Ladybug while there. Alan drew the line at the doggie booties since they'd drive her bonkers, or more bonkers than she already is, so we walked out without purchasing anything but our meal.

So we're home, the pup has been retrieved from the All Dogs Club and is passed out on her comfy bed in the den, and the last load of laundry is in the dryer. I've got the University classes almost ready to release, I just need Thjora as one more set of eyes to look over them, and hope to open them for registration tomorrow. And now I think it is well past time for bed.

Just goes to show that [info]attack_laurel  is truly a rock star!
The November 2008 Visitor Gazette to the Williamsburg area hosted an article on their front page featuring Jamestown's Foods and Feasts, and we got to see AoD's mug smiling back at us from Page 1.

She's quoted as saying:
"I love talking to the public. I like explaining the culture of the 17th century to people. The material culture of the era is interesting to people. It's what people focus on, and this is a way of tying that in to the history of the colony."

Full article in PDF format.

Although Cindy just laughed when, as Jimmy directed, I asked her why she was choking the chicken...

Thanksgiving weekend was wonderful, and reminded me of things to truly be thankful for.

We drove down to Mike and Kirsten's for their Lost Lambs Thanksgiving celebration on Thursday morning. We skipped traffic, and were greeted by many friends and soon-to-be friends. It was great to see a whole host of folks, especially the ones rarely seen like Evja and her Tom, as well as the Caitlin and Naro. The food was plentiful and delicious, and the company was beyond compare. I was able to sit and chat a bit, embroider some, examine a simple antique loom and research information on how it may be warped for the new owner, showed off pictures of T-bone's eldest daughter with her pink rifle at the range, as well as help with some of the set-up, and redirect a child who was trying to open a nut with the pointy tines of a gardening tool that a rock might be easier and safer. There was no football, no Macy's Parade, and yet the day was full.
For friends, old and new, present and absent, I am blessed with a richness of company I am proud and humble to have around me.

We spent the night at Two Dog Hill, and after a leisurely morning of leftovers for breakfast, as well as Caitlin's fabulous blueberry bread, we kidnapped Kit and stole her away to Jamestown. We only worked a half day at Jamestown Settlement on Friday, but were kept busy by the wealth of visitors with interesting questions and a thirst for knowledge. I spent most of the four hours with Sandy at the Devon Oven, not baking, but being the mouthpiece to her activities to engage those interested in the methods of cooking of the past, and some of the daily life experiences those first folks to Virginia may have endured.
For the opportunity to participate in such a fun volunteer activity and have some faith restored in the creativity and search for information on history by the visitors, I am thankful.

Afterward, we retreated to Carla's rental condo for showers, easy pannini sandwiches for dinner and yet more interesting company. While a tired lot, we had Jimmy to entertain us, fun time with Cindy from JYF and excellent tales of the visitors experienced that day.
I am grateful for the gift of laughter.

Saturday we decided against a return to Jamestown since someone's back was unhappy from spending a day in armor, and someone else was a bit peopled-out. We helped pack up the condo and make cookies for breakfast using tin-foil and got back on the road home to Two Dog Hill, in a car full of fine conversation. Once returned we were greeted by a treed Corby, and very happy pups, and settled down for a bit more of a visit, and a nap, and some more embroidery before whisking off to downtown Charlottesville to join Rich and Genie in a post charity hockey game meal. The food was yummy, and again the company and conversation was fine. We were again captivated by stories of minor, if anticipated, family drama, and I only had a little of someone's Liquid Love (cocktail drink) spilled down my back, with good natured ribbing on the wet stickiness. :) Alan and I made it home safe and sound that night and crashed into our own bed with a happy belly of food and fun music in our heads.
For the freedom to do as we please and alter plans, I am lucky.

Sunday was spent sleeping in to the sound of the rain, taking care of some of the minor projects around the house, like hanging the hall bath mirror, hanging shower curtains, putting away parts of the kitchen into the upper cabinets, and given the opportunity to really consider placement and usage, and enjoy the new space. (Kirsten, the tea has been moved to be mostly over the electric kettle instead of crammed in a cabinet beside the stove.) I looked at the leftover paint chips from the bathroom consideration, and used it for a first level weeding out of colors and tones for paint, but I think we really need the countertops in before a final decision is reached. I meant to do some shopping, but the rain and inertia kept me home snuggled on the couch.
I am thankful for a comfortable home, and my Alan to share it with.

Last night was the delayed shopping for my Salvation Army Christmas Angels. I shopped for 3 hours trying to carefully choose items needed and hopefully desired by the disadvantaged children chosen. Normally I try to get two angels about my nieces ages so I can shop for twice the folks in the time given. This year I took on three siblings of different years, primarily due to the eldest daughter being a larger girl at only age 11. I hope most of all for her I was able to find clothes to make her feel pretty and boost her confidence. I also used some coupons at DSW to get her and her brother shoes that might last them a while, but still appeal to their youth. Naturally gift receipts are included so that color preferences or incorrect sizes can be exchanged. I bargain shop, but also try to get a good haul for the children I host, knowing that they are lucky to be loved, but not lucky enough to have extra for even some necessities. I spend more on these children than I do for my own nieces likely, but my nieces rarely need clothes and shoes, and mostly do not want for goods, activities, nor affection. And while I love to give to the Red Cross (good), Doctors Without Borders (great), and Heifer International (amazing!), I know that these gifts go directly to the children who may not expect much of a celebration despite the time of the year.
For the ability and inclination to be charitable, I am thankful for my job and my upbringing.

We survived another Landing Days at Jamestown, but this time the trek home was the most dangerous part of the weekend.

Since [info]attack_laurel's Bob was unable to attend Landing Days this year, we had her-entertaining-self along for the ride. Last week had been a tough one and I was waffling on going to Jamestown this weekend, but as we were waiting for traffic to die down and Alan to complete his conference call, she and I chatted until I finally snapped and started packing. We got on the road kinda late, but meant that we had no traffic to deal with on the after-rush hour drive down. Our room was fine, if you don't care about having a fan in the bathroom, and at least nice and spacious.

Saturday was lovely, and I got to spend most of my day hanging out with Carla and [info]stringmonkey in the barracks. They made food, a couple of dishes in the dutch ovens, but I mostly sat near the herbs and tried to engage visitors in identifying them. I plucked some rosemary, thyme, sage, hyssop, mint and lemon balm, and a staff member had picked an impressive fennel stalk, which was used in the pork, apple and onion dish. After the busy day was done we retired back to the LaQ and tried to motivate towards the shower, and rounded the day out with take-out from Red, Hot and Blue, and hanging out with friends, and even social time with Lara, Fred, Cin and folks. I did bend Cin's ear on sprang, but need to find some of the 18th Century examples for her to explore for use at Yorktown. I also played with my knitting and screwed it up twice, and eventually got it right after a bit of ripping out of rows with a bit of [info]stringmonkey guidance.

Sunday ended up being cooler and comfortable and quieter, but not without fun. I spent much of the day with [info]attack_laurel in the Governor's House so we could take turns and spell each other to take breaks. She worked on hemming curtains for the bed and trimming a cushion, and I did knitting, sewing and some servant-like cleaning up of cobwebs, and such. It was a good day, and we even got to start the day with a bus load of visitors from England. I was even able to take a little bit of time to do some shopping in the gift shop for some books and pamphlets. Alas a tornado watch was announced, and as attendance was down, we did decide to take our tired selves out about an hour early.

The drive home ended up being the worst part. I-64 became progressively packed, so we dove off for 17N to 301N which had much less traffic, but became slow due to the rain. There was also a bit of a back-up crossing the Nice bridge over the Potomac's choppy waters, but luckily there was no accident, just volume. Alan drove the first part and we took a break for dinner at the Outback in La Plata, before I drove the last bit in the driving rain on the beltway home. Despite leaving around 5pm, and noting that we did take an hour break, we still didn't get home until after 10pm. Once home and unpacked in as much as we cared to, we fell in bed and slept the sleep of the ded.

I am glad I went, and had a lovely time with friends, but am justifiably sore, with sore hands and arms from the knitting, sewing, cleaning, and gripping of the steering wheel to guide us home safe. It was awesome to see attack_laurel's lacing of the petticoat to the bodies in action. Really inspiring to make a new petticoat and bodies, but I should finish my new shift and convert an old serviceable back-closing petticoat to front closing so I can try lacing it in as well.

Upcoming is a fun trip to the MFA and more embroidery at Plimoth! excellent.

Apparently this weekend was the 25th MTA held at Jamestown. I guess after making a big fuss for the 400th Anniversary, celebrating a 25th seemed kinda eh. But it was cool to see the variety of camps and troops. I hadn't seen the grand parade before, so I played paparazzi a bit on Sunday towards the end of the day.
mta308

After all the stress of ramping up and surviving the 400th, it was nice to be a bit more laid back. Lara, the new fort manager, asked us what we wanted to do and let us have our ease. Since Sandy's mom was in the Barracks, it seemed a bit crowded on Saturday, so I spent time knitting on my Tudor stocking outside the Buttery to draw folks in, checked on Dexter doing medical demos in the Gov's house to spell him a bit, and pretty much bounced around. I did have a small triumph in that the apricot almond custard needed to be removed from the Dutch Oven while Sandy and Carla were out looking at the sutlers and it was just Diane and myself. So, I managed to lift the pie plate out without cracking and dropping anything, and also without burning myself. Hooray! The food that was made on Saturday was extremely yummy and even sustained us some into Sunday.

Sunday was a smaller staff, so I worked with Jennie and Lara in the Barracks cooking simple pottages. I was able to take a few breaks and visit with others, drool over Eadric's pottery, chat with the nice folks of Grey's Company, buy the last of the amazing Canadian's knives (although I still need to arrange payment), and at Alan's direction, bought a nice chafing dish and pitcher so Alan can start doing period coffee preparation at events instead of using the camp stove and metal coffeepot. Yes ladies, I was asked to buy more pottery. Force my hand...

Alan and I exited the fort around 4:30pm, changed and got on the road home. We didn't encounter much traffic since we took 301 home to avoid the stretch of hell between Fredericksburg and Springfield, but we were dogged tired when we did get home. I've got an aching neck and sore feets, and Alan has an aching shoulder from a pinched nerve in his neck that he's visiting the chiropractor for. We've survived James Fort yet again, to play another weekend.

12 March 2008 @ 02:44 pm
I gave up and left a little early yesterday for home and rest. Since my front left tire was a little low, I stopped at a Shell to add some air back to it. Sadly the air hose wasn't working, or rather wasn't sealing to allow the new air in, and instead ended up draining more air from my tire. grr... So I drove up the road a little further on even less air and finally pulled into the most expensive Exxon ever, which luckily has free air, so all was well.

By the time I got home I realized that I needed to ice the back of my head. It was aching me and likely the source of a lot of discord in my brain, including the headache. So, I iced it and had some warm tea, and I iced it while I had a nap, and then I iced it again before bed. It was much looser this morning, if still tight, thanks to icing and flexeril, so I went into the chiro for a wonderful adjustment before coming into work. I am feeling much better, if not 100%, so I have a massage scheduled with Wendy OTMH tomorrow morning. That should set me a-right.

Looking forward to MTA this weekend at Jamestown, even if the weather does look typically cool and damp. It won't be freezing, but the dampness always makes things a little more misery inducing. At least total deluge is not called for, just thundershowers on Saturday. Sunday looks nice. Of course I haven't done any upgrades to my kit. I need to do a proper pair of bodies, and more than the one doublet, but I haven't. I haven't even finished the simple shift I started last year for May, nor the forehead cloths and extra coif I cut out back in June. I'm such a slacker. Regardless, I think it will be nice to get back into costume. I haven't dressed up since Ymir in my Viking. Very bizarre feeling, it being the middle of March and I've only managed one SCA event so far this year. You'd think I would have at least been productive in all this downtime, but apparently not.

Things I learned from Jamestown:

~Comfy shoes are a necessity. I shamefully wore my merrels for the weekend, since my knees were already bugging me. glad I did. I even borrowed the insoles from my period shoes and put them in my merrels to make them more worthy. Feet still hurt like the dickens on Sunday night. I also need to sit down more.

~Pack the straw hat. I am so grateful to Heather for the loan of her straw hat when I was on laundry detail out in the sun. Such would have helped immensely the day before at the devon oven too, since shade is slim. Ha! Slim Shade-y.

~Take in the petticoat bodies another inch or so. I'm already overlapping the lacing in the front and there is still plenty of room, especially when the linen warms up and stretches out. I'm guessing the next alteration will be in the center back and then I'll have to retire it.

~Finish more than one shift. The ability to borrow one of Alan's shirts was wonderful, but they just aren't long enough. I've really got to finish the hand sewn shift, as well as the other things on my list.

~Following that, be more realistic about what can and can't be done before the event. I always underestimate the time required to finish things. Perhaps a quickie machine sewn shift is in order once the hand sewn version is complete.

~Hem the hand sewn blue linen petticoat higher. It was a dragging, and that was very sad, and muddy in the rainy walk to the shuttles. It looked fine on it's own, but when matched with the other shirts, it was pitiful. Also, I need to add more lacing holes to the waistband since it was already on the tightest and too loose, adding to more dragging.

~The rental/time share condos may be nice for the kitchen, but use of one would have been a godsend for the laundry facilities alone. Must remember that for the next long weekend at Jamestown.

~Study more of the history before heading in. You'll still know more than the average visitor, but it doesn't hurt to have more info when interesting conversations and questions arise. Well? Who would have thought about well placement questions, except when doing laundry... sigh.

~Drink more water. It may have killed many of the original settlers, but it'll save your life. Thanks to Carla, other volunteers and staff, for the constant refills.

~If out in the sun, reapply sunscreen after lunch, and don't forget the tops of your forearms if you roll up your sleeves.

~Plan in and enforce more breaks so we can pop into the exhibit/gift store/A/C. I didn't get to anything but the fort and the potties all weekend. But it is very tough to leave the station for personal time when there are visitors streaming in and it's not an emergency.

~~~~~~~~~~
That's all that comes to mind right now. I took some pictures of our irises yesterday, but didn't get around to uploading them. I'll share pictures of smiley yellow Gyrth irises later. In store this weekend is an extremely relaxing weekend at home. I plan on sleeping in, napping, retail therapy and perhaps a movie out. Still haven't seen Spidey 3 yet and wanna. I've also got like 5 bags of clothes I need to donate to the Salvation Army or some such tomorrow too.
Well, Alan and I are finally back home and unpacked. I have a mountain of laundry to work through. Last night I actually sat down to watch TV and didn't pick up something to hand sew. My hands are very grateful for the break. I just sat like a lump and enjoyed CSI, Heroes, CI and some Jon Stewart. What a lovely relief.
But Jamestown was the big thing this weekend.
This is my May create-your-own Despair.com calendar image. While dark, it gives me giggles and a sigh every time I see it.
Titus Andronicus last night was so wonderfully bloody, it also made me smile. Apparently Theo, Roland and Alan don't agree with me about the happy ending. There's blood. And Pie. And Comeuppance. Happy. The Shakespeare Theatre did a great job, I highly recommend it for anyone not-squeamish over the age of 18. In hindsight I wish I had thought to move the play to next week, but alas, the break was lovely and welcome.
I've also done the machine sewing for some last minute lace-on sleeves for the petticoat bodies, as well as a quickie blue linen square necked doublet. I figure I'll pin it in place if I don't get around to hooks and eyes, which is entirely likely. I just realized how non-linen my wardrobe was and that push had to come to shove. I thought about taking hand sewing into the play with me for before the start and during intermission. While we deemed it would not be gouache, it would have been tacky, so hand sewing remained in the car. But I've negotiated with Alan that he'll drive us down to Williamsburg tonight after rush hour so I can sew and I'll drive back on Sunday evening when we are completely exhausted.
Prep and nerves and parking and issues aside, I am really looking forward to the grand 400th celebration at Jamestown. It will be so much fun. I'll get to chat to so many new folks, and hopefully educate a few on what those first brave souls dealt with to start our great nation, our great roots. Though Alan did say we should perhaps quiz each other in the truck on the way down on some of the major facts. May 13th 1607? Right?
Save the really interesting posts until Monday. I'll be out of contact all weekend and don't want to miss anything good. :)
In other news, I started on the waistband of my navy petticoat last night, after a lovely dinner with the Mellins and getting some progress made on the laundry front. Hooray for small, if good progress. They must have made crab meat intentionally difficult to get at since it is so tasty. Yummy crab melt and hot crab dip.
In the vein of life goes on, I just realized we are 23 days from the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown Landing Days. Holy crap. After the big push to get wool for Foods and Feasts, Training and MTA, I now need to hop on and get some linen ready for May. crappity crap crap.
On my list, in order:
  • new smock (or two)
  • new coif and forehead cloth
  • navy petticoat
  • pink petticoat
  • red jacket
  • linen payre of bodies
  • blue linen doublet
  • cassock?
I also need to do an A&S entry for Crown, which might end up being a smock. Two birds, one stone, all that.
crap.
Nothing like turning to work to distract from reality. Hey, at least I got the lawn mowed yesterday afternoon. Took an hour with the push reel mower, so good exercise too.
jtown-training-2-07 011
Had an excellent time at the Jamestown Volunteer Training weekend. The classes were great, gave me a new perspective on how to approach working at Jamestown, and I got to see many friends, some I hadn't seen in a while. I posted pictures from Saturday night and Sunday on my flickr page. I really need to bring and use my camera more often to events of every nature. Of the 40ish in attendance, at least 25 were Gardiner's, possibly more and my mental count is off. I wished I could have taken the Women in 17th Cent class, but I'm very glad I was forced to take Jim's Intro to Onsite Learning. The Gallery tour by Callie was awesome. Last November Alan and I skipped the last part of the exhibit, but had I known there were cool houses to explore and extant textiles I wouldn't be kicking myself now. Very cool. Cyndy and I actually took a quick tour of the textile areas again at the end on Sunday, and went to see the film as well. They have done a great job with the Jamestown overhaul and it is quite a thing to see. It was interesting also seeing the other areas outside of the fort like the Powhatan village, the ships and the Riverfront Discovery area. When I get a chance, I'd like to explore them more when it's not freezing cold. I also wish I had made the time to go back to the gift shop to pick up that book on the Jamestown digs by Kelso. Perhaps in March.
Items I was most covetous of this weekend include Kit's new blue Dutch Cloak and Roland's knit wool socks from a UK reenactors faire.
Worst parts of the weekend were dealing with back pain (half a flex in the middle of the day each day helped) and driving home in the icky if insignificant weather on Sunday night and missing Rome. I'll have to watch it On-Demand sometime before next Sunday.
I was thinking about doing the 101 question meme and took the Heroes quiz (I'm Audrey the female cop btw), but really, I just want to lay down on a heating pad and/or take a nap. I did get a new wool doublet for Alan to the needing buttonholes and buttons stage by the end of the weekend. I've got a cloak to make this week, a play on Wed, which means laundry is bumped up to Tuesday night, and stuff to do for KA&SFest, as well as figure out my road/crash plan now that my previous plan has been shaken up. Oh, and I have so much I want to do by MTA, but I've also got to pack and head to Gulf Wars for a week. Can't say I'm complaining about that, but much to do, and all I wanna do is sleep.
EDIT: The reason I used the sail icon was that the ships at the docks and the general feeling of escape has made me want to go sailing again. Really wanna go sail, besides I have the WRECK hat to wear on-board thanks to the Mellins. Maybe I'm just longing for a swim.
Considering the gluttony (and siren call of the napping couch) that is Thanksgiving, and then all the foods at Foods and Feasts, it's truly a miracle that I only gained a pound this week.  Whoohoo.  I also am officially wearing pants the next size down today. Even my sweater and blazer are looser. Went shopping on Wed and again last night and have a few smaller pants that should carry me for a while. Will also have to contemplate at what point to weed the larger sizes out of the closet. Right now they are just taking up space, but I fear that as soon as I donate them, weight will come back on.  Pessimistic? Me? Never.
My current to do list is finish reading my book and to do Xmas shopping and cards for folks. We're still not sure what we're even doing for the holiday, but I know that I get a week and a half off, and I am greatly looking forward to it.
First of all, Thanksgiving was lovely if just the two of us. Do you know how hard it is to cook Thanksgiving for just two? But I made it with only 1.5 cups each of leftover green beans and mashed taters, as well as a pound of turkey and half a pound of ham.  Mmmm... ham...  Glad we stayed home, got to work on healing the Alan, staying out of the wet and cold, and last minute finishing.
Working at the Jamestown Settlement Fort was a blast. I had lots of fun there. I'm sure I screwed up unintentionally some, but that should be fixed with the training weekend in Feb. I got to perform a range of tasks from dishes, to chopping vegetables and meat, to stoking and adding wood to the fire to keep the coals creating and the pudding boiling, and even did some knitting while listening to [info]attack_laurel in the Govenor's house, as well as helping Giacomo make sausage on Sat. Alan and I got our volunteer cards and I'm looking forward to more time there, especially the May 2007 festivities. Note: It seems tickets for that will be sold in advance only, none at the door, for those planning on attending.
I am home, tired, sore in places, but very fulfilled. I will read the materials much more carefully before next time and probably pack less period but more comfy shoes that will blend for next time. My feet and ankles are killing me. We also got to swing through the new galleries, very fab, and check out the new intro movie, as well as visit the gift shop for goodies. Hooray! Very Few pics from the weekend can be seen here. And my outfit worked out just fine, comfy and supportive all day. Could use some taking in, hemming more and I think I need to remove some length from the back of the bodies, but all in all, not too shabby.
