This morning our fourth and final lotus blossom of the Summer bloomed in all it's glory.

A week ago we lost the fairest of the fair. As I sat admiring the flower this morning some parrallels struck me. Let's start with the obvious, for it is lovely as was she. Her favorite color was pink and on the first day the blossoms are a gorgeous shade of pink. It smells nice, not overpowering, but sweet and delicate. They both have a heart of gold. Each lotus blossom takes a week or two to form and is only with us for a brief time, but completely worth the wait. The large leaves of the lotus provide shade and shelter for the fish and frogs and other fauna. And finally the lotus can be surprisingly fierce. Much like roses have thorns, the lotus has rough bumps on each stem forming a serated edge to cut out anything not working in harmony with it.

Or I could be a bit nuts. Regardless, I wore all pink today, from my scrunchie to my shoes, in Courtney's honor.

When I got home from working Commencement this morning (ugh, I do not do 7am well) I go to hang out with the Ladybug in the the backyard for a bit. There were two wonderful surprises stealthily waiting for me.

First, was the first blooms of the year off our Gyrth irises. Hooray for happy yellow sunshine flowers!

I love the Gyrth iris blooming time. sigh. We have a pot of g-irises and sweet flag for Mel the Wiser, and I think for Gianetta too. Anybody else wanting some Gyrth pond irises, let me know for the next time Alan takes the axe to the overgrown pots.

But also lurking in the over-grown honeysuckle vines by the bog, was an Eastern Box Turtle that Ladybug sniffed out.

Of course she was more than a little bit skittish at the slow moving rock, so was quite the barky dog around him. Eventually I dragged her inside to give the turtle the time and space to escape to wherever s/he found more friendly. Luckily she amuses me greatly, and I like to share:

The rest of the day has been napping, embroidering outdoors, walking the pup on an extra long walk- just before the rain, and watching the Preakness.

Have not seen a return of the Blue Heron. Hopefully it was just a fluke and we won't really have to worry about them until Winter. Then I took a closer look at the fish when feeding them last night, and man are they huge. I need to lay the yardstick on the edge of the pond and try to catch them on film at feeding time some time. That puny heron wouldn't have stood a chance. :)

My tootsies are feeling better now. Blisters have gone away, although I did sink to wearing flip flops for the foamy cushiony goodness on Tuesday. My legs are feeling better, especially the outsides of my ankles/calves that I strained from walking funny on Monday to avoid walking on my blisters. That was stoopid. Heating pad and rest helped.

Still need to finish the little sample embroidery. I'm stuck on what to do for the vine given the materials I have on hand. Do I compromise and just use the Isabella in the Ceylon stitch for the vine? Do I dig out the gold from a kit we got from Tricia back in June '07? Do I try that gold in the ceylon, or dig up plaited braid instructions? Do I break down and order the sanctioned plaited braid instructions online? sigh...

I haven't been to an event since Pennsic and am lacking in motivation for Lochmere this weekend, though it will be fun and wonderful once there. Totally dayu-tripping it. BTW, is anyone booked to crash with us that I forgot about? We think the bedrooms are not booked for the weekend.

So, contrary to my statement to finish those unfinished projects before starting something new, I've buckled. After our last Plimoth session, and the acquisition of more GST colors, I was inspired to embroider a little sample to both show off the colors and sparkle. I took inspiration and tracings from Extreme Patterns' Arabella coif pattern, and designed a little 3x3" (which I reduced to a 2x2") pin cushion of folded pansies, a thistle bud, a "plain" worm and a bee (from a nightcap in the MFA). The worm is done, and I can't wait to try the bee with the black GST. Drew it out on Wednesday, played a bit with the embroidery this week and weekend and hope to finish it up soon. I think it's very cute. Will post in progress pictures when complete.

Sunday Alan and I decided to take a nice walk in the pleasant weather. We saw chipmunks, squirrels, a bunny, and more than a few deer. One deer crossed the path slowly and disappeared into the woods, but then we saw practically a herd of deer (5?) in the woods by a stream drinking and nibbling on grass. They were all very cute, and I told them to stay in the woods and off the roads, but a bit too tame. As we moved on down the path, I said to Alan in my best Marissa Tomei accent, "So, you're a dee-ah..."

Sadly the walk was longer than I had planned and I wasn't wearing the best shoes. Our little half hour walk ended up being over an hour over more hilly terrain, and I was able to discover exactly how out of shape I am. Now my hips/quads are very sore, so I've been stretching them periodically. And my feet have a few blisters on the balls of my feet. Thank goodness for my Dearfoam slippers so I can mosey about the house in relative comfort. Man, work shoes were murder today, and I was even wearing Naturlizer flats. sigh.

To top it off, this morning I wake up to a Blue Heron in our backyard. dammit. It looked to be immature, smaller and speckled on the breast, but took a few tries to chase away. First I just opened the sliding glass door, then I had to actually yell at it, and finally I had to yell and clap from the bathroom window. Stupid bird. I thought of digging out the bird netting, but couldn't be late, so I just added some more water to the pond to give the fish room to maneuver and was vigilant as I was getting ready for work. I didn't see it about on nearby roofs or anywhere when I left. I'm hoping that if the heron did try for the pond that Bubba and the other big fish bitchslapped it into next spring.

Made it to Land Grab and home again. On the whole it seemed to be smoother this year, and I even got time for a nap once all the tents were in the air and folks set to unpacking their personal stuff. We even got to dinner sooner than normal and weathered the storms just fine. This morning the common tent was set-up, decorated, and some final details settled like staking down the barracks walls, putting up the sheet walls, painting on the ground for the remaining tents, and visiting with friends. The weather ( Saturday night rain storm aside) is lovely, 70's to low 80's. In fact it was 82 degrees this afternoon when we left to come back home. I was kicking the ground like a sulky child to have to leave such a fine set-up to come back home and work for four more days. Only not having any garb with me made me finally crawl in the truck to come back home. I did at least get a shower before coming home to approve the plumbing. :)

Oh, and pictures of our fourth lotus bloom:

- Home sick today, barely got out of bed, made it to work for an hour to retrieve my laptop and help some folks, Dr. appt, pharmacy for drugs, soon heading back to bed. Plz be gone tomorrow, haz packing and land grabbing to do.

-Theoretically packing the trailer tonight. Must dig common stuff out of basement prior to heading over to puzzle the trailer out.

-Banner pole did not survive storm in our area last night. Fell over in the wind/rain, but is unharmed. Short stakes and newly rain-swollen ropes to blame. To be fair, it was quite a storm, though no loss of power. Alan and I probably could have set-it back up last night, but we weren't communicating well (I blame my addled brain) so dropped it safely (ie: off the fence, not into the house, flat on the ground) and went to bed.

-Not much progress on hemming the standard yet. :( Did laundry and a bit of pink fingerloop braiding instead last night, after nap.

-Unprecedented fourth lotus bud blooming today. Is very pretty. Smells lovely, if you stick your nose right in it. teh pink makes me happiez.

On a more positive note, we came home from the weekend away to see a third bud from the lotus making its reach for the sun. I thought it might wait until tomorrow to bloom, but it bloomed this morning bright and pink.

After last year's pitiful display, I threatened to Alan that the lotus better make a better show this year or it was getting evicted from the pond. I think it heard me. Okay, thank you, the eviction notice has been canceled. And it was lovely yet again.

Our lotus bloomed this week. I was certain it was going to wait for the weekend when we wouldn't be here to observe and document.

708lotus003

Last year was such a disappointment, that I am glad we got a nice show yesterday morning. Sadly, the first bloom must have been too heavy for its stalk as it bloomed on Tuesday looking at the ground, not the sky. But the second bud was lovely and full in bloom yesterday morning looking skyward. Yesterday it was this pretty pink. Today the bloom was a lovely cream color, if a bit more flattened out. I didn't have the same dramatic lighting as Alan caught for the icon picture two years ago, but soft sun-behind-clouds.

~~
I hope folks have a happy Fourth. We're headed down to Two Dog Hill ([info]theblueleader's) for some camp projects and good hangout/social time, as well as a Gardiner's cook-out on Saturday at the Three Dog Creek. :)

So one of the treats of heading up to Boston and Plymouth over a week ago was that we got another exposure to Spring. This meant that we got to see fresh daffodils and smell apple trees in bloom, and the allergies that come with. It really was nice to see stuff in bloom again, but did really affect the allergies just as bad as when I got them the first time around. Had more than a few headaches and really appreciated having the zyrtec and nasonex on hand. Made concentrating on embroidery tough at times though. Ah, well.

Also, when I left there was a hint that Gyrth's irises might soon bloom. I came home to a wonderful splash of color as Gyrth's irises were displaying a riot of yellow all over the back yard. These are not subtle delicate plants. Heck, last Fall Alan had to hack some out of the bog as it was overflowing and we were lame and left the removed bulbs in a clump on the side of the hill. While not in bloom, that batch of bulbs, though not submerged in water, are sending up green shoots of leaves and continue to survive. So we have one huge batch in the shallow end of the pond, and two huge batches in the deeper end of the pond. One pot has been so overgrown with the irises that it won't stay aloft and keeps capsizing. Of course the frisky fish could have something to do with that. Despite that it is sometimes like trying to sit a sumo wrestler in economy class seats, Gyrth's irises are like a beam of sunshine in our backyard.

We're also close to having water lilies in bloom. I saw a few buds this morning but wasn't sure if there were going to wait another day to bloom or not. We also have one purple pond iris in bloom, which adds variety to the riot of yellow. My chamomile is taking off like crazy too, and our mostly wild roses are in bloom as well. Yay, Spring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had a lovely time at Sapphire this weekend too. Might have to save that for another later post. Had a good time at the MOL table with Simona on Saturday and Ceridwen and Deborah on Sunday. Had a lovely time at court and was so glad for the accolades announced and bestowed. Was too lazy too change out of garb for dinner at Mario's, but wasn't the only one, and the food was very tasty. I actually had my leftover ziti (good but nothing compared to [info]laruse's mom's) for dinner again on Sunday night.
(BTW, despite all the freakin' da mundanes talk on the Merry Rose, when the guy who was busing the tables asked why were were dressed the way we were, I simply said "We're with a group that does medieval and renaissance reenactment, and are over at Tom Scott Park this weekend." No need to belittle his knowledge or pretend we were something we weren't.)
I had a great time just hanging out with peoples in general, despite not getting to hang out with everyone. Because, man there were folks I meant to spend more time with, but inertia and my comfy furniture under our tent won out.  [info]bdeb and [info]laruse were gracious and spot on as the new representatives of their group, and the King and Queen continued to be as charming as ever. I did manage to miss all order meetings this weekend, but I was busy working at the MOL table, and really, just fine to get accounts later.
 What a wonderful weekend!
Friday night we welcomed the lovely company of Thjora, Corby, Philip and his daughter Samatha for the weekend.
Saturday was Lochmere Baronial Birthday and the Masters of Defense tournament. Kit and I arrived on site with the tents and stuff since I promised to be early for set-up, and I encouraged the boys to take their time in following. I was asked to fill in as the MOL again this year, and I had the excellent company of Adriana from Dun Carraig as an MOL-IT. She was amazing and will be a great addition to the small army of Atlantian MOLs. She must have memorized the handbook, as she was spot on and we got immediately to signing folks in and handling the paperwork for the authorization and transfer. First on deck was Brian's Free Scholar prize and some socializing. But, I'm not sure that my cheer was appreciated. ;) Then 18 fighters braved the heat to fight in the tourney, 4 heavy, 11 rapier, and 3 crossovers. Corby, Theron and Griffin went to the finals, which we did round robin style, where Corby was determined the overall Master of Defense for the 3rd year in a row. Philip was the winner of the heavy list, and Alan was the winner of the rapier list.
After court, we took orders for Outback, called in the Takeaway order, and Alan and I picked it up on our way home. There was a great impromptu feast and party back at our place with the additional company of the Mellins and Morgensterns. Isobel sold some more of her beautiful jewelry. Philip, unsettled with the terrible caulking job in our guest bathroom, tore out the old stuff and re-caulked it in the right color and technique, with my blessing and thanks. He's just like my Dad, can't rest easily if something needs fixing, and I'm okay with that. Everyone was dog tired from the heat and activity of the day, so we weren't a wild party bunch, but we managed to have a good time just the same.
This morning, I was able to sleep late, and then we had a brunch of turkey bacon, asiago cheesy eggs and toast before folks got on the road for home. Alan went to work on the pond, deconstructing the bog filter garden and fixing the leak that has been plaguing us off and on since Pennsic. I did some cleaning up, dusting in the den, and hung up some of the eradicated iris leaves and sweet flag in the garage to hopefully basket weave with later. All I've read on the subject says to dry materials in the circle, but these leaves are too firm at the base to coil, so they are currently hanging straight upside down and I hope they will still be workable. perhaps I'll test to see if they can coil after drying out a bit but not all the way. We shall see. (BTW, anyone with experience in drying your own basket-weaving materials, I'd love to hear from you.)
Then, whilst Alan continued to slave away in the heat on the pond, I decided to tackle the bookshelves in the living room. We ran out of space and the display shelves for the pottery and glassware were a bit crowded, so we got a new bookshelf with lighting and doors from IKEA and, after some shifting, had extra space. I was tired of shoving new books just where they fit, so I took almost all of the books off the shelves, re-grouped them by categories that apparently only I understand, and then put them back on so that we could more easily access those we like to access more often, and show off those we want to display, as well as tuck away those we like but don't use much. Clare, Ealdthryth and Nia would likely still be appalled by the organization system, but I'm much more comfortable with it. And now we have room to grow in several areas. I also discovered duplicates of some books. So the first person to contact me (either not requiring shipping or willing to pay for it) who wants a copy of The Book of Margery Kemp ISBN 0-14-043251-5, New Worlds, Lost Worlds by Susan Brigden ISBN 0-713-99067-8, or Invisible Power: The Elizabethan Secret Services 1570-1603 by Alan Haynes ISBN 0-7509-0676-6 will get a free copy. :) The entire re-shelving and organization took 3.5 hours, but I think it was time well spent. Maybe I'll post pictures later.
And now I'm sleepy. The things I didn't get to today was doing the re-caulking in our bathroom (inspired by Philip's work in the guest bath) or shoe shopping with Theo, but perhaps some of that can be remedied tomorrow after work.
I tried to post this from work this afternoon during lunch, but it seems IT has blocked posting to LJ. Mind you I can still read and compose, just not post.
Anyway, we're mostly packed, after long afternoon naps, and will be ready to go in the morning. sigh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Acupuncturist good, weird process, but good. I've been drinking green tea in the morning yesterday and today. He says it will help. Will anyone have some hot water I can borrow on Sunday AM for my tea? We are definitely flying on the high speed-low drag radar this weekend.

Our plans for Sapphire are to drive down Sat AM (early morning, like leave the house around 5am early) to make it to site to set-up our tent on the field and have it ready to go for the fighting and other activities the day brings. We'll be camping under our shade overnight and hanging out, and attending meetings on Sunday, and then pack up Sunday afternoon/evening for the trip home. Hopefully we can catch a movie and some relaxing on Monday. The days should be fun, if a bit warm. I haven't signed to work anywhere, and am actually looking forward to simply playing hostess under our shade. We'll have a good group of folks that I don't get to spend nearly enough time with.

Yesterday was a lovely day. Despite the fact that I slept terribly on Wed night, tossed and turned a bunch, I awoke refreshed and fine, put on a pretty dress and come into the office. After a day of meetings and projects, I get a message from Wendy that she had to cancel her appointment with Wendy OTMH, and would I want the time slot. So naturally I said YES! and called the Salvation Army to see how late they accept donations, called the salon to schedule the appointment, and took off a little early. My evening consisted of dropping off four bags of too-big clothes at the Sal Army, an hour long massage with Wendy OTMH (hadn't seen her since before Gulf Wars!), and then an hour of shopping at DSW for shoes. Okay, despite the hour I spent there, I left empty handed. Yes, no more new shoes. The only things that attracted my eye were the pale yellow chucks with daisies and ladybugs on them and since I don't wear my pink ones often enough, and I have NO yellow in my wardrobe, I decided to pass on them. I tried on, what felt like, the entire store's selection of shoes in my size, but nothing was tempting enough to come home with me. The lovely peep-toe leopard print low wedges from Nine West would have been wonderful, but the 8s were too tight and the 8.5s slid around on my feet. So sad. They were very cute. The pale pink ballet flats were also cute, but I could see them dirty in two shakes of a lambs tale, so left them there. As I did the pale pink Nine West purse, since really, I've already got at least 4 pink purses. Odd restraint, and yet it did feel good to at least check to make sure there weren't shoes out there that needed to come home with me. And I walked around the store a bunch, which was good for me. Does bending to try on shoes count as calisthenics? Afterward we had some adult chat time with the Olney's, I got to play with Speedwagon some and help put him to sleep, and then Akbar's Indian carry-out and home for a late dinner and lovely chat with my sweetie before collapsing in bed before midnight.

507pond 003The pond irises are in full bloom. I took some pictures this morning to show the full impact of our Gyrth irises. We have several bulging pots and I'd wager they are so tall Tonwen could hide in the forest and so big that I could park Jabba the hut behind them and obscure him completely. We've also got some crazy growing sweet flag pond grasses, if anyone needs some of them. I have great and glorious (which means unlikely to actually execute) plans of harvesting the sweet flag in the late summer, and drying it for basket weaving. We shall see. I've also seen a cool picture of a basket of iris leaves that would be awesome to try. Any basket weavers who'd like some of the materials?

So, other than that, I've got my new Ann Taylor casual pants on, a more zen approach to the world, and a truck to pack once I get home tonight. I confess I kinda miss the days when Jason used to tell me that if I were more laid back I'd be in a coma.

See some of you folks at Sapphire.

Still sick, but less so. Have play tonight that I'll pack cough drops for.  Need a nap.

Chased a large blue heron out of the pond this morning with a knock on the window. Hooray for the bird netting. Should probably add water to the pond.
