a good 28 hours...
 Wheeee!

Okay, so the past 28 hours has been awesome.

First, last night we went to see Argonautika at the Lansburg Theater downtown, and it was amazing. Truly, truly! If you can swing it to get tickets, I highly recommend seeing this show. Alan and I went in thinking, yay, more greek tragedy. But my constant comment was Best Greek Tragedy Evar! The writing was brilliant, the costumes were fitting, and the puppetry was fabulous. Yes, puppetry. Trust me, best use of puppets since Punch and Judy, or the Lonely Goatherd from the Sound of Music. It was hilarious, stirring, entertaining and poignant at the same time. How could you not love a play with a sparkly Naiad and Juno's amazing mood wings? Two thumbs up from me.

Last night after the play, we made it home fairly quickly, and then I got 8 hours of full sleep and even got to sleep in a bit since I had a follow-up appointment with my doctor. (Doing better but not well yet..) Seriously, sleep, and lots of it. awesome.

Then I made it into work for a bit and out to lunch with two of my fabulous faculty members for great Indian food at the Bombay Indian Restaurant in White Oak for their lunch buffet. It was fun to have a relaxing lunch and get to know them better in the process. Oh, and eat lots of bits of really yummy food. MmmmMmm.

And then tonight I prepped and headed over to Bess and Shecky's for their Blackspear night to teach fingerloop braiding. I was happy that first of all I was able to teach myself the method that most directions and recipes are written for, and then I was able to pass the learning on to Bess, Tara, Maggie and Zig. Always nice to have successful students, and I left my pink on pink trial piece for the wall of accomplishment in the basement. What a really fun evening with wonderful folks.

And now it is snowing. yay. With any luck I'll either get to take a snow day tomorrow, or at least sleep in a bit more.

More? You want some more?
Yesterday I was Posty McPostalot and yet I neglected to issue online Happy Birthday salutations to the [info]blondemuseon her 34th. Luckily I had sent her flowers, so she called me to thank me, and tell me about the wonderful snow on her birthday and getting to play in the snow with the nieces, so I got to issue congrats over the phone.

Saturday is Yule with the Trayned Bandes up in Abingdon. Since I haven't made anything new to wear, I guess I'll have the old green kirtle with red wool petticoat and gray wool doublet on. I've also got to make a run to the grocery store to pick up goods to make a couple of cheese tarts and some split pea soup to take along as our contributions. It will be fun to see folks, and I might take my laptop with pictures on it from our MFA visit to share with folks before the period evening kicks in.

It is also supposed to snow again tomorrow. And while I love the snow, I'm tired of it coming on the weekends. I mean it is supposed to snow during the week so we get snow days off of work. That's one of the great perks of working for a Uni, snow days. Yeah, the 1.5 hours off early yesterday does not count in my book. I want snow on a Thursday night with enough to cancel work the next day so I can sleep late and stay snuggled in bed.

Okay, whining off and stats on, thus proving I'm my own biggest fan...

more snow
I HAZ A SNOW PURSUN!
0107snow 009

I prefer to think of her as our guard snow-alien. I also got best-wife-evar points for shoveling the driveway, sidewalk, and walkway while my Alan was stuck in the E-ville DC traffic on his way home. After all my shoveling work I decided to make a snow-being with some of that removed snow, as well as making a snow-angel. Hadn't done either of those activities in years, but since I was already adjusted to the cold and wet, and the sleet had ruined the snow for snow cream, it seemed the next logical step.

whee!

snow shoes

Hooray! It is snowing. (and not canceling my last day of embroidery...) It is so pretty outside, when I steal a peek out of someone else's office window, that I just want to go outside and frolic in it for a bit before heading inside to change into dry clothes and sip hot chocolate and snuggle down with a good book and some snow cream or something... sigh, but alas, we are still at work. I'd really rather be home combing my notes on the MFA goods we got to see and writing them up for posterity.

But, at least I can share shoes. SHOES! The Walk This Way exhibit was fabulous, and since they were on display in areas that didn't have photography restrictions, I've uploaded them to my flickr account.
I'm honestly torn on my favorites, between the lovely pierce work small sample shoes from the 1610's and the lovely embroidered shoes from the 1720's. They actually had several (6) shoes from the 17th century as part of the exhibit that just made you want to drool. The detail, the seemingly senseless decorations, the odd slap sole shoes that were essentially wedges, the lovely stacked leather soles and the lovely silk ribbons, what can I say, I was smitten. And even Tammy and Catherine seemed interested even though they confessed to not being shoe junkies. (Surely a genetic defect, being female and not being into shoes...) I was very restrained in only packing three pairs of shoes for the 5 day trip up north.

Okay, I want to go home? Mother, may I?

SRSLY

event and a snow day

Okay, enough whining. Last week was packed. Monday found me abusing Theo's embroidery machine for Livia's cloak, and the embroidery on a new scarf for the Alan. While not done, I finally packed it in around 11pm to head home for bed. Tuesday night would have been laundry, but I was back at Theo's and the machine's finishing up the machine done details on said cloak. Wednesday was a lovely dinner out but a disappointing play with incapable understudy in lead role. Thursday I called to check on practice and it was called off, which was wonderful so I could do more work on the cloak assembly. Friday night was also final cloak assembly including whipcording 3.5 yards of silk trim for the edging, I was only up until 3am. Insert random pauses for heating pad usage and better living through chemistry.

Sunday we awoke to cute light fluffy snow. Alan was wise and shoveled the front walk and driveway in shifts. So he went outside to shovel 3 times, but it was in smaller batches, ultimately better for the back, right? I spent the entire day being a non-productive bum. I spent all day in fleecy pants and top and made brunch (turkey bacon and cheesy eggs), snow-cream (southern delicacy of snow, milk, sugar, and vanilla*), did 5 loads of laundry, took a 2 hour nap, and made half of a nalbound mousie. The rest of the time I spent vegged out in front of the tube, or watching the snow blanket form around us. I did take a few more pictures of the thick snow to share with the FL parents and Hawaii sister, also to be uploaded later. I think we got about 6 inches before the rain came and started tamping it down a bit. Most sad of all, the roads were all cleared last night, so there was no delay or cancellation of work today for moi. At least Alan kept a nice fire glowing in the den all day for warmth and ambiance, and in case of the slight chance that we had power outage.

Tomorrow morning I have a massage scheduled with Wendy of the magic hands. And oh how I need it.

*Like lobster is more of a delicacy to those not from New England, snow cream is a delicacy only to those who don't get snow often, like southerners.

weather musings and memes
So, yesterday and last night's winter weather has struck, and Alan was up shoveling 3-4 inches of sleet off the driveway this morning. Unfortunately the sleet that fell yesterday afternoon (after I shoveled off the heavy snow) is still packed down and glued to the pavement. It's a good deal treacherous out there. The icemelt salt mix is only doing so much. Hooray for the university closing down for the day. I'm more than content to stay home and snuggled under a layer of fleece and not facing the elements. Alan's going into the office for a little while, so I told him to take Belle instead of Serenity so he'll have 4x4 and traction control on the way to the Metro station. He's just not allowed to dent her.

I hope to get in the sewing room and make some progress on my projects, unfortunately quite a few of them and no free weekends. That will be dependent on my right wrist feeling less achy, thanks to the shoveling of the heavy snow yesterday. Perhaps a thermacare wrap is in my future. The hands are pretty stiff and sore themselves as well. Is it the weather or just overuse? who knows. Ever since Friday they've been feeling rather weak. Made getting stuff out of the basement a little awkward on Friday, and hammering of tent stakes was better done by others, but there you go.  Right, off to go check the pharmacy for options and the sewing room for productivity.

Happy Valentine's Day one and all, not in a Hallmark way, but a courtly love way. :)

uber update, UofA and Ymir
Livejournal, forgive me, for I have sinned. It has been 12 days since my last entry. Bad Gen.

So, lots has happened, I was just unmoved to post about anything for a while.

Last week was fairly uneventful. I worked from home on Monday to meet a furnace guy who did nothing to help track down our strange bumps in the night, which luckily have not happened since. Tuesday was a sick day, and I think I slept most of the day. Wednesday I took the liberal leave offered for the slight amount of snow, and Friday was off for the drive down to Ymir and Friday night set-up.

Today dawned with flurries, but the driveway had a nice light layer when I left for work this morning. I made sure to snap a few pictures of the backyard in case the pristine white turned to grey mush. Luckily work closed offices at 1pm, so I was home by 2pm, in time to shovel the wet driveway, and sprinkle with some salt to help with some of the sleet that poured down on my head. We'll see what else we get tonight. I'm hoping for a day off tomorrow due to ice, so I can snuggle in at home and enjoy a day off.
